System Administrator Programmer information

What is a system administrator programmer?

System Administrator Programmers are IT professionals who manage, configure, and maintain computer systems, networks, and servers, while also writing scripts or code to automate administrative tasks. They combine the skills of a system administrator—such as ensuring system security, uptime, and performance—with programming abilities to improve efficiency and solve complex problems. Their responsibilities often include monitoring system health, deploying updates, troubleshooting issues, and developing custom tools. This hybrid role is essential for organizations that require both robust system management and automation to streamline operations.

How do system administrator programmers typically balance their time between system maintenance and software development tasks?

System Administrator Programmers often split their responsibilities between ensuring the stability and security of IT systems and developing scripts or tools to automate processes. On a typical day, you might handle urgent system issues or user requests in the morning, then dedicate focused blocks of time to writing or refining code in the afternoon. Balancing these tasks requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize based on business needs. Many teams follow ticketing systems and agile methodologies to manage workloads effectively, and collaboration with other IT staff and developers is common to ensure smooth operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system administrator programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Administrator Programmer, you need a solid understanding of operating systems, scripting/programming languages, and network management, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with automation tools (like Ansible or Puppet), cloud platforms, and certifications such as CompTIA Linux+ or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set exceptional professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure reliable infrastructure, efficient system performance, and streamlined collaboration between IT teams and stakeholders.

Are there still system administrator programmer jobs?

System administrator programmer roles continue to exist, combining skills in system management and programming to maintain and develop IT infrastructure. These jobs often require knowledge of scripting, network management, and certifications like CompTIA or Cisco. Demand remains steady in organizations that rely on complex IT systems and automation.

Do system administrator programmers make good money?

System administrator programmers typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and certifications. They often have skills in scripting, network management, and system security, which can lead to higher pay as they gain expertise. Overall, this role can offer a solid income within the IT industry.

Job description

The Siegel Group (TSG) is a privately held real estate investment and management company based in Las Vegas, Nevada. For more than two decades, TSG has acquired, repositioned, developed, and self-managed real estate assets throughout the United States. With a diverse portfolio spanning multiple brands and industries, we are continuing to grow and are looking for positive, hardworking, growth-minded people to grow with us.

We’re a small, efficient IT team looking for a self-starter who can own their domains without constant direction. This is a hands-on build-and-operate role across our M365, endpoint, and network security stack. You’ll need 2–3 years of real experience and the ability to hit the ground running.

Microsoft 365 & Identity

  • Deep administration of the M365 platform — Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and related services
  • Administer Entra ID — user lifecycle, Conditional Access, MFA enforcement, and role assignments
  • Configure and manage Purview DLP policies across M365 surfaces and endpoints
  • Conduct access reviews, enforce least-privilege, and maintain license and role documentation

Endpoint Management

  • Deploy and manage Intune — enrollment, compliance policies, configuration profiles, and Autopilot
  • Maintain endpoint security posture through EDR tooling, including sensor health and alert response

Network & Firewall

  • Manage next-gen firewall (Fortinet) policy configuration and change requests across all sites
  • Centralized policy management and cloud-based visibility across distributed network infrastructure
  • Support VPN, segmentation, patching, and firmware updates

Security & Alert Operations

  • Monitor, triage, and respond to network and security alerts across endpoint, firewall, and SIEM platforms
  • Investigate events, clear false positives, escalate confirmed incidents, and document dispositions
  • Support SIEM configuration, data source onboarding, and alert rule management
  • Support vulnerability tracking, remediation coordination, and incident response activities

Helpdesk Escalation & Documentation

  • Serve as a technical escalation point for Tier 1/2 helpdesk issues beyond basic troubleshooting
  • Create and maintain runbooks, how-to guides, and knowledge base articles
  • Contribute to asset inventory accuracy and configuration management records

General Operations

  • Write and maintain PowerShell scripts for automation and administration
  • Keep documentation, runbooks, and change records current
  • Mentor and train team members across platforms and processes, building shared capability so the team can operate effectively at scale

Required Qualifications

  • 2–3 years in a systems, infrastructure, or IT engineering role
  • Deep, demonstrable M365 experience across the full platform
  • Hands-on Intune and Entra ID experience
  • Familiarity with next-gen firewall platforms — policy management, rule review, VPN
  • Experience triaging alerts in an EDR or SIEM environment
  • Solid networking fundamentals — TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPN
  • PowerShell scripting
  • Self-directed with strong follow-through — comfortable owning problems in a lean environment
  • Must be available after hours as needed for emergencies and escalations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Fortinet platforms (FortiGate, FortiManager, FortiCloud)
  • Microsoft Purview DLP experience
  • SIEM configuration and data source onboarding experience
  • Microsoft certifications (MS-102, AZ-104, SC-300, or equivalent) are a plus
