System Administrator Network Engineer information

How do system administrator network engineers balance proactive network maintenance with responding to unexpected issues?

System Administrator Network Engineers often divide their time between planned maintenance tasks—such as patching, upgrades, and performance monitoring—and responding to unforeseen incidents like outages or security breaches. Most teams use ticketing systems to prioritize incoming issues, but also schedule regular maintenance windows to minimize disruptions. Being adaptable and good at multitasking is crucial, as the work environment often requires swift shifts between proactive and reactive responsibilities. Collaboration with IT support, security teams, and management is common to ensure both immediate response and long-term network health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system administrator network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Administrator Network Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network protocols, system architecture, troubleshooting, and a relevant degree or certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA. Proficiency with network monitoring tools, operating systems like Linux/Windows Server, and virtualization platforms is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in diagnosing issues and collaborating with teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining secure, efficient IT infrastructures and minimizing downtime in business operations.

What is a system administrator network engineer?

System Administrator Network Engineers are IT professionals who manage, maintain, and troubleshoot computer networks and system infrastructures for organizations. They are responsible for ensuring network security, optimizing performance, and implementing upgrades or patches as needed. Their duties often include configuring servers, monitoring network traffic, supporting users, and responding to technical incidents. These roles require strong problem-solving skills and up-to-date knowledge of networking protocols, security practices, and hardware/software systems.

  • Own internal IT tickets from intake to resolution, including documentation, communication, and escalation.
  • Support onboarding, offboarding, account provisioning, device setup, and access changes.
Microsoft 365 & Identity
  • Administer and troubleshoot Microsoft 365 services, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, licensing, groups, security settings, and user access issues.
  • Support Entra ID, MFA, conditional access, permissions, and identity-related troubleshooting.
  • Assist with M365 configuration, governance, documentation, and service improvements.
Systems & Infrastructure
  • Support Windows and, where applicable, macOS/iOS/Android devices.
  • Support device lifecycle management, including provisioning, configuration, updates, troubleshooting, and retirement.
  • Manage endpoint policies, software deployment, patching, and compliance using endpoint management tools, such as Microsoft Intune and Defender.
  • Support Windows Server, Active Directory, file services, permissions, backup, monitoring, and virtualized infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot common server-side issues related to authentication, file access, permissions, performance, services, connectivity, backup status, and business applications, escalating complex issues when required.
  • Support day-to-day security hygiene, including access reviews, endpoint protection alerts, patch compliance, account security, and basic incident triage.
  • Escalate security risks or suspicious activity according to internal procedures.
Projects, Automation & Continuous Improvement
  • Participate in internal IT projects, upgrades, migrations, process improvements, and system rollouts.
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, knowledge base articles, and standard operating procedures.
  • Use PowerShell, automation tools, and AI-assisted workflows to improve repeatable IT tasks such as onboarding, offboarding, ticket routing, reporting, documentation, device management, and Microsoft 365 administration.
  • Support internal adoption of AI-enabled productivity tools where appropriate.
  • Comfortable experimenting with AI tools to improve documentation, troubleshooting, and IT service delivery while following company security and governance standards.
Qualifications:
  • 3-5 years of progressive IT support, systems administration, or internal IT experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience supporting end users, endpoints, business applications, and Microsoft 365.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server, Active Directory, Entra ID, group policy, permissions, and access management.
  • Experience troubleshooting desktop, application, network connectivity, VPN, printer, device, and collaboration issues.
  • Familiarity with backup, patching, monitoring, endpoint management, and IT documentation.
  • Basic scripting or automation experience, preferably PowerShell.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to support users with different technical skill levels.
Nice-to-have:
  • Experience with Microsoft Intune, Autopilot, Defender, or endpoint management platforms.
  • Familiarity with Azure / Entra ID administration beyond basic user management.
  • Experience with Power Automate, PowerShell, or workflow automation.
  • Exposure to AI productivity tools such as Microsoft Copilot or similar tools.
  • Experience supporting hybrid work environments.
  • ITIL Foundation or practical IT service management experience.
