As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for sysml in Virginia is $31.67, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.00 and $34.57 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a SysML Modeler typically collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams during a project?

SysML Modelers work closely with systems engineers, hardware designers, software developers, and project managers to ensure the system's requirements and architecture are clearly communicated and understood. They facilitate model-based systems engineering (MBSE) by creating and maintaining SysML diagrams that serve as a common reference point for all stakeholders. Regular interactions include participating in design reviews, clarifying requirements, and updating models based on team feedback, which helps identify potential issues early in the development cycle. Effective collaboration skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into visual models are key to success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SysML Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SysML Modeler, you need strong systems engineering knowledge, experience with model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodologies, and proficiency in SysML modeling, typically backed by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with SysML modeling tools like MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, or Enterprise Architect, and relevant certifications such as OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional (OCSMP), are highly valued. Excellent analytical thinking, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help translate complex technical requirements into clear system models and facilitate team collaboration. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately modeling complex systems, ensuring clear stakeholder communication, and supporting efficient system development and integration.

Will AI replace system engineers?

AI is unlikely to fully replace system engineers, as their role involves complex problem-solving, system integration, and decision-making that require human expertise. Instead, AI tools can augment their work by automating routine tasks and analyzing large data sets, allowing engineers to focus on design and strategic planning. Continuous learning and proficiency with modeling languages like SysML remain essential for system engineers to adapt to technological advancements.

Is SysML still used?

SysML (Systems Modeling Language) is still actively used in systems engineering for modeling complex systems, especially in industries like aerospace, defense, and automotive. Professionals often use SysML tools such as MagicDraw or Enterprise Architect and may hold certifications in model-based systems engineering (MBSE).

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced systems engineers, especially those in senior or executive roles in aerospace, defense, or technology industries, can earn $500,000 or more annually. These positions often require advanced certifications, specialized skills in SysML or systems modeling, and extensive industry experience.

What is SysML and what is it used for?

SysML, or Systems Modeling Language, is a general-purpose modeling language used to specify, analyze, design, and verify complex systems. It extends UML (Unified Modeling Language) to support systems engineering, enabling professionals to model hardware, software, data, processes, and personnel within a unified framework. SysML is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and defense to facilitate clear communication and collaboration among multidisciplinary teams. Its diagrams help represent system requirements, structure, behavior, and parametrics, making it easier to manage complexity and ensure system integrity throughout the lifecycle.

What industries use SysML?

SysML is widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and systems engineering for modeling complex systems. Professionals working with SysML often collaborate with engineers and use modeling tools like MagicDraw or Enterprise Architect to develop system architectures and requirements.

Job description

Overview

SCCI is currently seeking a Systems Engineer to join our team in support of the Battle Management System (BMS) family of projects, with a primary focus on applying Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools to support the design, development, and delivery of tactical fire control systems. This role bridges systems-level architecture and software implementation, ensuring technical coherence across hardware and software boundaries. You will work closely with customers, end-users, and cross-functional teams to develop system models, define requirements, and support integration and verification activities.  The ideal candidate will bring depth in both MBSE tooling and software engineering practice, with the ability to develop rigorous SysML/UML models, engage meaningfully in software architecture discussions, define and analyze message standards and interface control documents (ICDs), and support software integration activities from a systems engineering perspective. This position will closely collaborate across other engineering functional areas, including software developers, hardware engineers, test teams, configuration management, training, and safety to ensure technical coherence across the full system lifecycle.  This position is located in Dahlgren, VA.

SCCI offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Health, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability benefits, 401k with Company Match, time off consisting of 2 weeks of paid vacation, 48 hours of sick/personal leave, and 11 paid Holidays.
