What is a switch programmer?

Switch Programmers are specialized professionals who configure, maintain, and troubleshoot telecommunications switching systems. They work with hardware and software that route calls, data, and other communications through a network, ensuring efficient and reliable connectivity. Their responsibilities often include updating switch software, managing routing tables, and resolving network issues. Switch Programmers play a critical role in telecom companies, helping maintain seamless communication services for customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a switch programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Switch Programmer, you need strong knowledge of telecommunications systems, digital switching technology, and programming languages like C or Python, typically supported by a degree in computer science or electrical engineering. Familiarity with telecom-specific platforms, protocols (such as SS7, SIP), and experience with switch configuration tools are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective problem-solving are crucial soft skills for diagnosing and addressing network issues. These competencies ensure reliable network operations, minimize downtime, and support high-quality communication services.

What are some common challenges faced by switch programmers when configuring telecommunication systems, and how can they be addressed?

Switch Programmers often encounter challenges such as integrating legacy systems with modern network architectures, troubleshooting complex call routing issues, and ensuring system reliability during high-traffic periods. These challenges can be addressed by staying up to date with the latest telecom protocols, collaborating closely with network engineers, and utilizing robust testing environments to validate configurations before deployment. Proactively documenting configuration changes and participating in regular training can also help Switch Programmers adapt to evolving technology and minimize errors.

Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isn’t just about technology—it’s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the world’s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Controls Engineer III

As a Controls Engineer III, you lead deployment, programming, optimization, and support of Building Management Systems across Switch data centers. You own complex controls projects from design through commissioning. You ensure systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in compliance with safety and change management standards. This role requires strong HVAC controls expertise and independent technical judgment in mission-critical environments.

What You’ll Do
  • Develop and implement sequences of operation for HVAC and power-related control systems.

  • Program, install, and commission BMS control devices and supporting infrastructure.

  • Conduct functional testing and system validation for new and modified installations.

  • Maintain BMS databases, graphics, trends, and technical documentation.

  • Create and update as-built wiring diagrams and control schematics.

  • Lead assigned controls projects, including planning, execution, and quality assurance.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex controls and system performance issues.

  • Coordinate with Data Center Operations, Construction, IT, vendors, and customers.

  • Support after-hours response and emergency system issues when required.

  • Follow established safety standards and change management processes.

  • Provide technical guidance to junior Controls Engineers.

What We’re Looking For
  • You work independently on complex technical assignments.

  • You make sound decisions in high-pressure environments.

  • You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • You follow protocol and plan for risk in a 24/7 operational setting.

  • You collaborate across departments to resolve issues.

  • You take ownership of system performance and follow through on commitments.

  • You identify practical improvements that increase reliability and efficiency.

What You’ll Bring

Required

  • 4–7 years of experience installing, programming, and maintaining HVAC building management systems.

  • Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems in data center or critical facility environments.

  • Experience with transformers, air handling units, cooling towers, pumping systems, and chilled water systems.

  • Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.

  • Experience working safely around live electrical and mechanical equipment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Preferred

  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, or Software Engineering, or equivalent technical training.

  • Industry certifications related to HVAC controls or building automation systems.

If you meet most of these qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
