A Surgical Tech Student job is a training position where individuals gain hands-on experience in surgical technology under the supervision of experienced professionals. Students assist in preparing operating rooms, sterilizing instruments, and supporting surgical teams during procedures. This role allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, developing essential skills for a career as a surgical technologist.
As a Surgical Tech Student, you will participate in supervised clinical rotations where you assist with preparing operating rooms, handling surgical instruments, and supporting the surgical team during procedures. You’ll observe and practice maintaining sterile fields, learn instrument handling, and help with patient positioning and room turnover tasks. These rotations are designed to gradually increase your responsibilities as you build confidence and proficiency. Working closely with experienced surgical technologists, nurses, and surgeons, you’ll gain real-world insight and valuable teamwork experience that are critical for your future career.
To thrive as a Surgical Tech Student, you need foundational knowledge of sterile techniques, human anatomy, and medical terminology, usually acquired through an accredited surgical technology program. Familiarity with surgical instruments, operating room protocols, and simulation labs is essential, and students may be required to obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Attention to detail, strong teamwork, communication skills, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help students excel during clinical rotations. These abilities are vital for maintaining patient safety, supporting the surgical team, and successfully transitioning from student to practicing surgical technologist.

The Surgical Tech Intern works under the direct supervision of a precepting Surgical Technologist. As an Intern, you will collaborate with the precepting Surgical Technologist to provide a safe, efficient environment for the surgical patient and staff by working in accordance with the Aspirus standards of practice and by adhering to Aspirus policies, procedures, universal precautions, and sterile technique.
ELIBIBILITY:
Students who are currently enrolled in a Surgical Technologist program.
Surgical Tech Intern I - 1st year students
Surgical Tech Intern II - 2nd year student
Demonstrates knowledge of commonly used surgical equipment and instrumentation.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 3 months of hire.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Surgical Tech Intern I will work in Sterile Processing.
Sterile Tech Intern II will work in the OR.

HOURS: Flexible, occasional status; will work with student hours.
PAY RATE: Intern I: $16.00/Hour, Intern II: $17.00/Hour
