What is a Surface Pattern Designer job?

A Surface Pattern Designer creates repeatable patterns and designs for various products, such as textiles, wallpaper, stationery, and packaging. They use hand-drawn or digital techniques to develop visually appealing patterns that enhance a product's aesthetic and market appeal. Their work involves researching trends, developing color palettes, and collaborating with manufacturers or brands to produce commercially viable designs.

What are some common projects or responsibilities a Surface Pattern Designer handles on a daily basis?

As a Surface Pattern Designer, you'll typically work on creating repeat patterns and print designs for products such as textiles, wallpapers, apparel, or home goods. Daily tasks may involve researching trends, sketching new ideas, digitizing artwork, and refining designs based on client or team feedback. You may also prepare files for production, collaborate with product developers, and present concepts to internal stakeholders or clients. This variety ensures every day is creative and allows you to see the direct impact of your designs on finished products.

What does a surface pattern designer do?

A surface pattern designer creates repeating or non-repeating designs for surfaces such as textiles, wallpapers, and product packaging. They use digital tools like Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to develop patterns that are visually appealing and suitable for manufacturing or printing processes.

How do you become a surface pattern designer?

To become a surface pattern designer, you typically need a background in graphic design, illustration, or fine arts, along with proficiency in design software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. Building a strong portfolio showcasing your pattern work, gaining experience through internships or freelance projects, and understanding trends and manufacturing processes are essential steps in establishing a career in this field.

Is surface pattern design oversaturated?

Surface pattern design is a competitive field, but opportunities remain for skilled designers with strong portfolios, unique styles, and proficiency in tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Success often depends on niche specialization, networking, and staying current with industry trends, rather than market saturation alone.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Surface Pattern Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surface Pattern Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, color theory, and pattern creation, often supported by a degree in graphic design, textile design, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD tools is crucial, and familiarity with print production methods can be beneficial. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help designers collaborate effectively with teams and clients. These abilities ensure the creation of appealing, commercially viable patterns that meet client objectives and production requirements.

Is AI taking over surface pattern design?

AI is increasingly used as a tool in surface pattern design to generate ideas and assist with repetitive tasks, but it does not replace the creativity and artistic skills of a professional surface pattern designer. Designers often use AI to enhance their workflow, combining technology with traditional skills to produce unique patterns. Success in this field still relies on a strong understanding of design principles, software proficiency, and originality.

Job description

Description:

About Aspirion

At Aspirion, our mission is simple and meaningful: to help healthcare providers get paid accurately, quickly, and transparently for the care they deliver. By combining deep human expertise with advanced technology and AI, we are helping make healthcare more affordable and accessible for everyone.

For more than two decades, Aspirion has been a market leader in revenue cycle services, specializing in some of the most complex and high impact areas of reimbursement. From challenging denials and zero balance reviews to aged accounts receivable, motor vehicle accident claims, workers’ compensation, Veterans Affairs, and out of state Medicaid, we take on the work that others cannot solve and deliver real results for our clients. At the heart of that success is our team. Our teammates are the foundation of everything we do. With more than 1,400 individuals across the organization, we are united by a shared commitment to delivering exceptional outcomes and creating meaningful impact for the hospitals and health systems we serve.

We are building a results driven environment where high performance, collaboration, and continuous growth are expected and supported. The people who thrive here bring a growth mindset, stay open to new technology, and collaborate across teams to solve problems. You will have the opportunity to work alongside a talented and driven team, engage with innovative technology, and play a direct role in solving complex challenges that matter.

Joining Aspirion means more than taking a job. It means being part of a team that is shaping the future of healthcare operations while making a measurable difference for providers and patients alike.

About the role

We are looking for a BI Analytics Experience Designer who is both an experience designer and a hands-on Power BI builder. This person will shape how information reaches the people who act on it and will translate that design into production-ready Power BI reports and dashboards. The work spans frontline operational dashboards used to manage daily workflow and executive-level reporting used to steer the business, and the design challenge is fundamentally different for each. This is a full-partner role in discovery and delivery, and success is measured against whether work drove a decision or changed how someone works. This includes participating in discovery alongside the Product Manager, designing and iterating against real user feedback, building the reporting experience in Power BI, and tracking adoption after delivery to confirm the work is doing what it was built to do.

Responsibilities

  • Discovery Partnership: Join discovery sessions alongside the BI Product Manager when the consumption experience is central to defining the problem. Observe how users interact with data in their actual environment, contribute a user experience perspective before solutions are attached to problems, and push back when a proposed direction is technically solvable but experientially wrong.
  • Experience Design and Power BI Build: Own information hierarchy, navigation, visualization selection, and layout across BI reporting products, and build those experiences in Power BI. Make and defend design decisions based on the decision the report needs to enable, not aesthetic preference. Translate approved concepts into production-ready dashboards and reports, partnering with the Analytics Developer on data availability before making design commitments.
  • User and Audience Understanding: Maintain working knowledge of both primary consumer types - operational users who need to act quickly and leadership users who need context and narrative - and design appropriately for each. Test designs with actual users from both categories before work ships.
  • Prototyping and Iteration: Prototype early and share work before it is finished. Test the design approach, not just the visual details, and iterate based on what users actually do rather than what they say they prefer. Move prototypes into build-ready specifications and shipped Power BI experiences.
  • Design System and Standards: Own and maintain the Power BI visual standard for the BI team, including color conventions, layout patterns, visualization guidelines, authoring standards, and reusable templates for the two primary use cases. Document design decisions so the standard can be evolved intentionally and applied consistently across new builds.
  • Experience Outcome Tracking: Track whether shipped work is being used and whether the experience is creating the conditions for decisions to be made. Surface adoption signals and design-related friction back into iteration rather than treating delivery as the endpoint.
  • Delivery Operations: Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and effort estimation as part of a structured delivery model. Work is tracked and managed in Azure DevOps.

Requirements:

Qualifications (Minimum)

  • 5 or more years designing data experiences - dashboards, reports, or analytics interfaces - in a production environment with real business users
  • Advanced Power BI proficiency with hands-on experience building production dashboards and reports, including report authoring, page design, interaction patterns, and information hierarchy, with the ability to make and defend visualization choices based on the insight being communicated
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with end users through some form of discovery, including ride-alongs, observational sessions, usability testing, or structured interviews
  • Working knowledge of SQL, data modeling, and Power BI build constraints sufficient to have an informed conversation with data developers, recognize when a design depends on data that does not exist, and understand when DAX, model design, or source data changes are needed to support the experience
  • Comfortable operating with a high degree of ownership on a small team, taking work from discovery through design, build, and adoption without dedicated research, QA, or adoption support functions

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • A portfolio or work examples that show both experience design judgment and hands-on delivery of shipped Power BI dashboards or reports
  • Experience building or contributing to a design system or shared visual standard used and maintained by others
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or similar cloud-based analytics platforms
  • Experience working within a structured sprint-based delivery model with formal intake processes
  • Healthcare operations, revenue cycle, or claims processing domain experience
