The opportunity
We currently have an opportunity for an Underwriting Associate to join our Transactional Surety team based in our Nashville, TN office on a hybrid schedule. This role provides technical support to underwriters and producers, focusing on moderately complex commercial surety accounts. Surety is a specialized area of the insurance industry that provides financial guarantees to ensure obligations are met. At its core, Surety helps businesses and organizations build trust and maintain compliance. This role is on our Transactional Surety team. Transactional surety bonds support one-time or short-term obligations, often tied to specific projects or agreements. They provide flexibility for businesses that need coverage for unique or limited-duration commitments. The Underwriting Associate plays a key role in ensuring the efficient processing of new and renewal surety submissions. Some of the Underwriting Associate responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Support underwriters in developing and servicing a profitable book of transactional surety business, including new and renewal submissions.
  • Within delegated authority, approve, decline, and issue transactions for new business, renewals, and endorsements, ensuring alignment with Surety underwriting guidelines and company standards.
  • Document underwriting files and ensure completeness for final review by underwriters, utilizing automated desktop systems and tools.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for brokers and producers, providing timely responses to inquiries about Surety products and coverage.
  • Research and resolve moderately complex questions regarding Surety processes, procedures, and coverage.
  • Occasionally travel with underwriters to key producers/accounts to support business development and relationship management.
  • Assist in the development of new processes, procedures, or systems to enhance Surety operations.
  • Mentor and train other Underwriting Associates and Assistants as needed.

The expertise you bring
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of underwriting support or related insurance experience, with a strong preference for Surety or commercial lines.
  • Demonstrated analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact professionally with brokers, clients, and internal teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and underwriting systems.
  • High level of accuracy, confidentiality, and follow-through.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed for broker and client meetings.
  • Adaptability to changing priorities and business needs.

Our salary ranges are determined by many factors including location, role, experience and skillset of the candidate. The following ranges displayed reflect the target base salary for new hires; however, your recruiter will provide more specific compensation details during the hiring process. The typical base salary range for this position is: $64,000 - $75,000, based on the factors aforementioned. In addition to base salary, full time Intact employees are also eligible for bonus potential and a full range of benefits to include but not limited to:
