What is a supply chain?

A supply chain is a network of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in producing and delivering a product or service from the supplier to the end customer. It encompasses everything from sourcing raw materials to manufacturing, warehousing, transportation, and distribution. Effective supply chain management ensures products are produced and delivered efficiently, cost-effectively, and reliably, minimizing delays and optimizing inventory. Supply chains are critical in almost every industry and play a key role in meeting customer demand and maintaining business competitiveness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a supply chain professional?

To thrive as a Supply Chain professional, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of logistics and inventory management, and typically a degree in business, supply chain management, or a related field. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, supply chain management software, and relevant certifications like APICS CPIM or CSCP are highly valued. Exceptional organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication set top performers apart. Supply chain professionals often encounter challenges such as managing inventory levels to meet fluctuating demand, coordinating effectively with suppliers and internal teams, and responding quickly to disruptions like shipping delays or shortages. Additionally, adapting to new technologies and ensuring compliance with regulations can require ongoing learning and flexibility. These challenges make strong problem-solving skills and effective communication essential for success in a supply chain environment.

Job description

We are partnered with a leading organisation looking to appoint a Functional Supply Chain Analyst to join their established supply chain team.

They are looking for someone with strong experience across supply chain, inventory, purchasing and international importing, who is passionate about using data and insight to proactively improve supply chain performance. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys analysing supply chain metrics, identifying inefficiencies, and working with operational teams to improve stock availability, inventory levels, purchasing and overall supply chain performance.

The successful candidate will become a key member of the supply chain function, providing analysis and insight across inventory, purchasing, demand, logistics and international supply. They will play an active role in identifying trends, highlighting risks and opportunities, and driving initiatives that improve supply chain metrics and inventory performance.

Responsibilities

โ€ข Analyse supply chain, inventory and purchasing performance to identify trends, risks, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.

โ€ข Proactively monitor key supply chain metrics, including stock availability, inventory levels, inventory turns, excess and obsolete stock, supplier performance, lead times, service levels and purchasing performance.

โ€ข Identify opportunities to optimise inventory levels while maintaining appropriate product availability and customer service.

โ€ข Work closely with Purchasing, Supply Chain, Warehousing, Finance, Sales and Operations to understand performance issues and implement practical improvements.

โ€ข Analyse demand, stock movements, purchasing patterns and supplier lead times to identify potential shortages, excess inventory and replenishment opportunities.

โ€ข Support the development and ongoing improvement of supply chain reporting, dashboards and KPIs.

โ€ข Investigate root causes of supply chain and inventory issues and make data-driven recommendations to improve performance.

โ€ข Analyse international purchasing and importing activity, including supplier lead times, freight costs, landed costs, duties and other associated costs.

โ€ข Monitor and assess the impact of tariffs, import duties and changes to international trade requirements on product costs and supply chain performance.

โ€ข Work with internal stakeholders and international suppliers to understand tariff exposure, import costs and opportunities to mitigate cost increases.

โ€ข Support the review and optimisation of supplier, purchasing and replenishment strategies.

โ€ข Analyse supplier performance and work with suppliers and internal stakeholders to address issues relating to lead times, availability, pricing and delivery performance.

โ€ข Support inventory planning and forecasting activities, helping ensure stock is available where and when required without unnecessarily increasing working capital.

โ€ข Identify slow-moving, obsolete and excess inventory and support initiatives to reduce inventory exposure.

โ€ข Use data to identify opportunities to improve purchasing decisions, order quantities, safety stock, reorder points and inventory policies.

โ€ข Support the analysis of landed cost, including product cost, freight, duties, tariffs and other import-related costs.

โ€ข Work closely with Finance to understand the financial impact of inventory and supply chain decisions.

โ€ข Develop and maintain accurate supply chain and inventory reports, providing clear insight to management and key stakeholders.

โ€ข Provide proactive recommendations rather than simply reporting historical performance.

โ€ข Support continuous improvement projects designed to improve supply chain efficiency, reduce costs and improve inventory performance.

Skills and Experience

โ€ข Previous experience in a Supply Chain Analyst, Functional Supply Chain Analyst, Inventory Analyst, Supply Chain Planner, Purchasing Analyst or similar role.

โ€ข Strong understanding of supply chain, inventory, purchasing, replenishment and logistics processes.

โ€ข Proven experience analysing supply chain metrics and using data to identify and drive performance improvements.

โ€ข Strong experience with inventory analysis, including stock availability, inventory turns, excess stock, slow-moving stock, obsolete stock and working capital.

โ€ข Experience working with international suppliers and managing or analysing international importing processes.

โ€ข Good understanding of international shipping, import processes, landed costs, customs duties and associated supply chain costs.

โ€ข Experience with tariffs, import duties and understanding their impact on product costs and international supply chains is important.

โ€ข Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret large datasets and translate findings into clear, commercially focused recommendations.

โ€ข Experience analysing supplier performance, lead times, purchasing trends and replenishment requirements.

โ€ข Good understanding of demand planning, forecasting and inventory optimisation.

โ€ข Experience developing and maintaining supply chain KPIs, reports and dashboards.

โ€ข Strong Excel skills, including the ability to analyse data, identify trends and build meaningful reporting.

โ€ข Experience with Power BI, ERP reporting, SQL or other data analysis tools would be advantageous.

โ€ข Experience working with an ERP system and understanding how purchasing, inventory, sales and supply chain data flows through an organisation.

โ€ข Commercial awareness and an understanding of the relationship between inventory, customer service, cash flow and profitability.

โ€ข Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate root causes rather than simply identify symptoms.

โ€ข Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to challenge existing processes and present recommendations to stakeholders.

โ€ข Ability to work collaboratively across Supply Chain, Purchasing, Finance, Warehousing, Operations and Sales.

โ€ข A proactive and improvement-focused mindset, with a genuine desire to identify opportunities and make measurable improvements to supply chain and inventory performance.

โ€ข Highly organised, analytical and comfortable managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
