Supply Chain Optimization information

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in supply chain optimization, and how are they typically addressed?

Professionals in Supply Chain Optimization often encounter challenges such as fluctuating demand, supply disruptions, and integrating new technologies with existing systems. To address these, teams frequently use data analytics tools to forecast demand more accurately, establish contingency plans for potential disruptions, and work closely with cross-functional teams like procurement, logistics, and IT. Regular communication and collaboration across departments are essential to ensure that optimization strategies are aligned with overall business goals and can adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in supply chain optimization, and why are they important?

To thrive in Supply Chain Optimization, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of logistics and operations management, and typically a relevant degree such as supply chain management, engineering, or business. Familiarity with ERP systems, data analytics tools (like SAP, Oracle, or Tableau), and certifications such as APICS CPIM or CSCP are commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These competencies are vital for identifying inefficiencies, implementing cost-effective solutions, and ensuring seamless coordination across the supply chain.

What is the difference between Supply Chain Optimization vs Supply Chain Analyst?

AspectSupply Chain OptimizationSupply Chain Analyst
Primary FocusImproving overall supply chain efficiency and processesAnalyzing supply chain data to identify issues and opportunities
Skills & CertificationsLogistics, operations management, data analysis, certifications like APICS CSCPData analysis, Excel, ERP systems, certifications like CSCP or SCOR-P

Job description

We are seeking a Sr. Supply Chain Manager to lead Outbound Customer Experience (CX) Performance within NACF Supply Chain Optimization team. This role owns evaluating cost trade-offs between Outbound Plan accuracy and Cost by owning how work moves through Amazon's Outbound Network-shaping Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) plans and network design to directly influence delivery speed and cost trade-offs at the network level.
Partnering with planning, design and analytics teams you will execute mid-to-long-term strategies including speed sensitivity modeling and connectivity optimization analysis

You will quantify how Fulfillment Center (FC) utilization, assignment patterns, and lane configurations impact 1D/2D speed, and build frameworks that enable leadership to make explicit speed-vs-cost trade-off decisions during the planning process. This includes regional stress testing for capacity-constrained Peak scenarios and building flexibility to absorb volatility into the network assignment plan.
This role operates both tactically and strategically-driving short-term execution while shaping the long-term direction of outbound network optimization. You will work cross-functionally with planning, operations, and technical teams, influencing senior leaders (Directors and VPs) through data-driven recommendations

The ideal candidate excels at navigating ambiguity, simplifying complex systems, and delivering results at scale in a fast-paced environment
Key job responsibilities
Own the Outbound CX speed-vs-cost trade-off framework, driving both tactical execution and strategic improvements to network delivery performance
Build and execute speed sensitivity and scenario models (BAU-to-Peak ramp, connectivity changes, regional stress testing) that quantify impact to 1D/2D speed and inform S&OP decisions
Work cross-functionally with planning, design, operations, and analytics teams to identify and implement process improvements that eliminate defects in outbound load-balancing and plan adherence
Leverage SQL/Python to conduct root cause analysis and data-driven experimentation at scale, translating findings into actionable recommendations for senior leadership
Develop metrics, early-warning frameworks, and reporting that flag speed risk proactively-contributing to Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) at the Director/VP level
Drive continuous improvement by creating scalable solutions that deliver a richer end-to-end customer experience while balancing cost
A day in the life
This role blends strategic modeling with tactical execution. Cross-functional collaboration is central to your success-you'll build relationships across planning, design, transportation, and fulfillment teams to align on network priorities and drive outcomes. You will lead weekly and monthly program updates, contribute to Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs), and serve as the connective tissue between analytics insights and operational decisions.

Every day, you're turning complex network data into concise narratives that enable leadership to act decisively-driving continuous improvement and better customer outcomes across Amazon's Outbound network.
