Job description

General Cleaning And Minor Maintenance Repair Worker

Under the general supervision and direction of the Department Superintendent, Foreman, Crew Chief, Operator, Driver (for the Highway Department); Facilities Supervisor, Senior Building Maintainer or Maintenance Custodian (for the Building and Grounds Department); WPC Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent performs general cleaning and minor maintenance repair work in the care and upkeep of a Town roads, buildings, grounds, and equipment.

The season/hours are:

(May – September): Highway: 6:30 am to 2:30 pm. Building and Grounds: 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Water Pollution Control Facility: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Hours and duration of assignment are subject to change.

Position Description And Job Functions

  • Receives oral and/or written instructions from supervisor.
  • Uses hand tools and small power equipment
  • Works on road crew paving, storm drainage and top soiling.
  • Cleans rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, and other work areas.
  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops floors and equipment.
  • Washes walls, windows, floors, trucks and equipment.
  • Empties waste baskets and removes trash from dumpster.
  • Assists with lawn mowing, brush cutting, weeding, painting, etc.
  • Sweeps dirt from building entrance walks, roadside construction sites.
  • Follows all standard safety procedures and regulations.
  • Reports tasks accomplished to Supervisor.
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Assists with Room set-up in Town facilities
  • Removes trash from dumpster
  • Paints (inside and outside)
  • Works outside on yards with various equipment mowers weedwackers and blowers

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Enters data into office computer system.
  • Assists operators and drivers with daily operation tasks.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and equipment used in cleaning operations.
  • Knowledge of practices, tools and materials in the performance buildings, grounds, and road maintenance.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to quickly learn assigned semi-skilled tasks.
  • Ability to recognize and locate conditions which require maintenance work.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with staff, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

Conditions And Qualifications

REQUIRED PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to perform heavy cleaning, moving, shoveling, lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, etc.
  • Ability to operate equipment requiring eye and hand coordination and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain or snow.
  • Sufficient stamina and health to perform strenuous physical labor.
  • Ability to move throughout and uneven sites.
  • Ability to get into and out of vehicles.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
  • The employee may be exposed to unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to use all recommended safety equipment and work safely at all times.
