Internship Overview

The Grainger Technology Group (GTG) internship is a 10-week, paid program based in our downtown Chicago office (with some days spent at our Lake Forest office) where interns work alongside technology and business teams to help deliver solutions that support Grainger’s customers and operations.

As a Business Systems Analyst Intern, you will gain hands-on experience working with enterprise applications, including SAP, SaaS platforms, custom-built solutions, and system integrations. You will partner with analysts, engineers, product and portfolio teams, and business stakeholders to learn how technology enables business processes and drives customer value.

Throughout the summer, you will contribute to meaningful work tied to real business outcomes while developing analytical, technical, and communication skills. You will also participate in networking, social, and professional development activities and present your work and key learnings to senior leadership at the conclusion of the program.

Position Details

Business Systems Analysts specialize in understanding, configuring, enhancing, and supporting the enterprise systems that power Grainger’s business operations. They combine deep knowledge of business processes with technical expertise to deliver solutions across platforms such as SAP, SaaS products, custom applications, and system integrations.

This internship is designed for students interested in both business and technology and provides exposure to enterprise systems, software delivery practices, process analysis, and stakeholder collaboration. Interns will work across a variety of technologies and business domains while learning how complex systems work together to support Grainger’s operations.

You Will
  • Partner with Business Systems Analysts, engineers, product and portfolio teams, and business stakeholders to understand business processes and technology solutions.
  • Assist in analyzing business processes, documenting system requirements, and translating business needs into solution approaches.
  • Create and maintain user stories, acceptance criteria, process documentation, and other analysis artifacts using established practices and templates, integrating appropriate AI tooling and practices where possible.
  • Learn how SAP, SaaS platforms, custom applications, and integrations work together to support end-to-end business processes.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies including backlog refinement, sprint planning, standups, and retrospectives.
  • Support solution delivery activities including configuration, testing, troubleshooting, defect analysis, and validation of system changes.
  • Assist with application configuration and maintenance activities under the guidance of experienced team members.
  • Explore appropriate use of AI-enabled tools to prototype, learn, debug, or increase delivery speed while validating outputs and understanding tradeoffs.
  • Analyze information and data to help identify opportunities for process improvement and business value including deployment of AI-assisted capabilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand customer, operational, and business needs.
  • Assist in documenting system capabilities, workflows, dependencies, assumptions, and risks.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing, continuous improvement efforts, and team initiatives.
  • Demonstrate curiosity, ownership, adaptability, and a willingness to learn new technologies, business processes, and ways of working.
  • Present your work, impact, and key learnings to technology leaders at the end of the internship.
You Have
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance/Accounting, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Expected graduation with a bachelor’s degree between December 2027 and June 2028.
  • Interest in business process analysis, enterprise systems, software delivery, and technology-enabled business solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Thoughtful AI tool literacy, including the ability to describe how you use technical tools, compare tradeoffs, and validate generated output rather than simply relying on it.
  • Experience through coursework, projects, internships, student organizations, or other activities where you analyzed problems and developed recommendations.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and common productivity tools.
  • Exposure to SAP, SQL, Python, Power BI, process mapping, Agile methodologies, software development, process automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, or business analysis concepts is a plus.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, learning agility, collaboration, and initiative.
  • Does not require sponsorship.
