Job Summary
Recreation Assistant - Bellevue Indoor Skate Park
Bellevue Skate Park is seeking an enthusiastic, creative individual who enjoys working with youth, teens, and adults in a dynamic skatepark environment.
As a Skate Park Recreation Assistant your responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting with skateboarding instruction for summer skate camps and clinics
  • Providing excellent customer service to all park visitors
  • Registering participants, signing up members, and checking in participants
  • Ensuring all participants have the correct safety gear before they skate
  • Setting up, selling, and maintaining skateboards and safety equipment
  • Helping create and maintain a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for all participants
  • Supporting other staff members in daily park operations and special events

This position reports directly to the Skate Park Community Services Coordinator.
Work Schedule: Flexible weekly shifts between 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM, some Saturdays from 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM, and full shifts during school breaks and summer camps, June 24th to August 26th 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM weekly except for July 6-10 and August 3-7.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet customers, provide information, and deliver excellent customer service to program participants and the public
  • Set up new skateboards and perform routine skateboard maintenance
  • Teach and assist with skateboarding-based recreation classes, activities, and day camps
  • Process program registrations, collect fees, and maintain accurate participant records and required forms
  • Light cleaning duties including mopping the ramps, cleaning equipment and basic clean up
  • Use the Civic Rec system for point-of-sale (POS) transactions and program registrations
  • Monitor the skate park and enforce all City of Bellevue policies and procedures
  • Handle park retail responsibilities, including assisting customers with purchases
  • Complete waivers, incident reports, and accident forms as needed
  • Perform opening and closing procedures at the skate park
  • Assist with program and event set-up and take-down

Staff Task List
  • Provide hands-on skateboarding instruction to participants of all skill levels
  • Monitor the skate park to ensure participant safety
  • Use knowledge of skateboarding, skateboards, hardware, and safety equipment to assist customers with retail and program-related decisions
  • Sign in new and existing members and participants
  • Ensure all participants have appropriate safety gear
  • Deliver friendly customer service and follow-up with participants and the public

Qualifications
  • Must be 16 years of age or older
  • Two or more years of experience in skateboarding, assigned recreation activities, or in the parks, recreation, and community services field
  • At least two years of skateboarding, skateboard knowledge, hardware, and safety equipment
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to present a professional appearance and positive attitude
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with the public, supervisor, and co-workers
  • Ability to diffuse conflict effectively when necessary
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Outlook; must be able to learn the Civic Rec POS and registration system
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Must be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certification (training provided if needed)
  • Must stay up to date and successfully complete all City of Bellevue mandatory training courses
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check prior to employment

Supplemental Information
Definition of a Variable Employee:
  • Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire
  • Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less
  • NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month)

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to physically play and demonstrate active games and skating movements
  • Indoor and outdoor recreational environments are subject to noise that varies from low to very high, distractions, seasonal heat and periodic interruptions.
  • Strong stamina and ability to keep up with campers.
  • Ability to perform work that is strenuous and/or repetitive.
  • Work involves talking, hearing, walking, running, and using hands to manipulate, feel, and operate objects. Ability to reach with hands and arms. Fine motor skills.
  • Near and distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Employees may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Employees may be required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
  • Ability to work with large groups of individuals including children, teens, and adults.
  • Assist with program set-up and take-down
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud
