We are currently hiring a Systems Design Intern for a summer term position, at our Hitachi Rail office in North York or Burnaby.

Hitachi Rail provides signaling systems for metros and light rail systems. Our solutions provide efficient, safe, and green transportation solutions for people around the world.

As a Systems Design Intern, you will support the system engineering team for process and data collection and participate in design.

This safety critical industry provides challenging and rewarding work. The Systems Department is responsible to design the signaling solution based on the customer needs and the features provided by our product. The department is responsible for communicating this design to all stakeholders and ensuring that the design is understood and developed accordingly. The work environment is fast-paced and challenging as it involves working with customers, operators, and other suppliers to understand the full signaling solution and how the solution interacts with other systems in the transportation system. In addition, the design must meet all the safety, performance, functional and operational requirements. The team is also responsible for supporting the development and testing activities.

The incumbent is accountable for performing the design work correctly, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages.

The work is typically defined by the Work Package Manager, then reviewed and approved by the Systems Architect and/or Manager. The System Engineer typically works with a team of engineers to define what will be designed, how it will perform and how it will be determined that it is working correctly.

Key Accountabilities

TECHNICAL:

  • The specific work assignment will be based on the project needs. General duties include but not limited to the following:

  • Develop, implement & maintain tools and scripts (Microsoft VB, DOORS dxl, etc.), to assist Systems engineers in day-to-day activities

  • Perform technical/engineering analysis as required for Systems Design

  • Assist other members of assigned project team in miscellaneous requirement specification and management activities, e.g.: Importing contract requirements and other documents into IBM Rational DOORS; Tracing customer contract requirements to system level and/or lower level requirements; Preparing documentation for configuration management and customer delivery purposes following established processes; Creating or modifying existing train control system & subsystem requirement specifications, interface requirements & systems design descriptions by analyzing, decomposing, modelling & refining customer requirements

  • Importing contract requirements and other documents into IBM Rational DOORS

  • Trace customer contract requirements to system level and/or lower-level requirements.

  • Accurately reports work progress and estimates to complete the assigned work.

Key Requirements

  • The successful candidate should be working towards a bachelor's or master's degree from an accredited university or college in Systems, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or Computer Science, Mechatronics, or a related field.

  • Completion of the second or third year of your undergraduate degree, or currently pursuing a master's degree

  • Good technical writing skills, excellent communication, and analytical skills; excellent command of the English language, both written and oral

  • Familiarity with project work environment

  • MS Office & Basic software and/or scripting knowledge

  • The ability to work 40 hours a week in a hybrid environment for the duration of the internship is essential. At least 2 days a week in the office.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Co-op student available for an 8 or 12-month term, with at least one additional quarter or semester of coursework remaining after the completion of the internship. (Toronto)

  • Previous coop/internship work experience in system design or rail industry is an asset.

  • Relevant school projects may be considered.

  • Rail signaling, CBTC (Communication Based Train Control), and knowledge of specification-driven systems design (as it applies to computer systems with both hardware & software operation)
