Job description

Position: Senior IBM iSeries / AS400 RPG Developer

Duration: 2 years, with one optional 2-year extension

Location: Twin Cities Campus, MN

Agency: University of Minnesota – University Services Information Technology (USIT)

Start Date: October 1, 2026

Work Mode: Remote with required onsite presence as needed. For a new candidate, plan approximately 1 day per week onsite at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus. The University noted this is an estimate and actual onsite frequency may vary based on work requirements. Candidates in the same time zone/local to the Twin Cities are advantageous.

Special Requirement:

  • Candidate should be comfortable working directly with University business users and technical teams.
  • Candidate must be able to work without detailed programming specifications.
  • Experience with University of Minnesota OR IBM iSeries should be included where applicable.
  • Other IBM iSeries and/or higher-education experience is relevant; it does not have to be University of Minnesota experience.

Job Description:

Perform business/systems analysis and hands-on programming for University Services applications operating on the IBM iSeries/AS400 platform. The resource will perform both maintenance/enhancement of existing applications and new development. Development is primarily performed using RPG IV and CL in an ILE environment, with PHP and Java also used.

The University's current environment is:

  • IBM iSeries / IBM i OS v7r4 running on a Power10 system.
  • The resource will also integrate internally developed systems with security/integration utilities, change-management tools, PeopleSoft, Identity Management, and other University enterprise systems.
  • The applications primarily support inventory, labor, billing, payments, and reconciliation of interfaced data.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform business and systems analysis for IBM iSeries applications.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, modify, and enhance existing applications.
  • Perform new IBM iSeries application development.
  • Develop applications primarily using RPG IV and CL in an ILE environment.
  • Perform PHP and Java development where required.
  • Support legacy RPG III applications where applicable.
  • Integrate internally developed applications with University enterprise systems.
  • Integrate with PeopleSoft and Identity Management.
  • Work with ARCAD change-management tools.
  • Work with Townsend security/integration utilities.
  • Support inventory, labor, billing, payment, and reconciliation systems.
  • Gather and analyze requirements directly from University customers.
  • Translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Work independently where detailed programming specifications may not exist.
  • Test and, when necessary, direct the work of other programmers without having supervisory responsibility.
  • Work closely with USIT's relatively small development team and University business customers.
  • Develop ongoing functional knowledge of University Services applications.
  • Participate onsite when required for design sessions, coordination meetings, and meetings involving other vendors.
