Job Description
Who Are We?
At Vertiv, we're on a mission to empower the people who power the future. From life-saving healthcare systems to high-performance computing, we design, manufacture, and service the products and solutions that keep the world connected. With over $8 billion in annual sales and operations in more than 130 countries, Vertiv is uniquely positioned to deliver greater value to our customers and create new opportunities for our people.
We are currently seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Sustaining (Compliance Lead) to join our engineering team, supporting existing data center rack, enclosure, and infrastructure product lines with primary responsibility for regulatory, safety, and compliance engineering across the product lifecycle.
Position Summary
As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Compliance Lead at Vertiv, you will serve as the technical authority for mechanical compliance of released rack and enclosure products used in data center and outside-plant environments. This role blends sustaining engineering with regulatory leadership, requiring deep knowledge of applicable standards, test methods, and certification processes.
You will work independently with limited supervision, partnering with electrical, safety, quality, manufacturing, and external certification agencies to ensure products meet regional and global compliance requirements while supporting ongoing production, field issues, and product changes.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the mechanical compliance lead for rack, enclosure, and supporting infrastructure products throughout their lifecycle.
  • Own compliance strategy and interpretation of applicable standards for data center and outside-plant installations.
  • Support and review designs for compliance with UL, IEC, and regional safety, seismic, structural, and environmental requirements.
  • Coordinate and support certification activities including UL/CB reports, ICC-ES, seismic qualification, and other third-party testing.
  • Evaluate and approve sustaining design changes (ECOs) for compliance impact and risk.
  • Investigate and resolve compliance-related manufacturing, quality, and field issues using structured root-cause methodologies.
  • Develop and maintain compliance documentation including test plans, technical justifications, deviation assessments, and risk evaluations.
  • Provide technical guidance to design engineers, manufacturing, and sales on compliance interpretation and application.
  • Interface directly with certification bodies, suppliers, and customers regarding compliance questions and disputes.
  • Support cost-reduction, supplier changes, and alternate materials while maintaining regulatory compliance.
  • Mentor engineers on compliance best practices and sustainment processes.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent technical experience.
  • 5-10 years of mechanical engineering experience with significant sustaining or lifecycle support responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a compliance or technical lead for mechanical products.
  • Experience with mechanical compliance standards relevant to data center and outside-plant infrastructure, including UL, IEC, and CB schemes.
  • Familiarity with environmental and material compliance requirements such as RoHS, REACH, and CA Prop 65.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and make authoritative technical decisions.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD; Autodesk Inventor required, Creo preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including interaction with certification bodies and customers.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting seismic qualifications, structural load ratings, and anchoring requirements (e.g., ICC-ES, OSHPD, IBC, ISTA).
  • Strong working knowledge of data center rack, enclosure, or infrastructure design.
  • Experience with thermal, airflow, and structural considerations for high-density IT racks.
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as Oracle PD Cloud or Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Experience using PLM tools such as Autodesk Vault, Windchill, or Agile.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes including sheet metal fabrication, welding, and coatings.
  • Experience authoring or reviewing compliance deviations, technical justifications, and risk assessments.

What Will Make You Successful?
  • Ability to translate complex regulatory requirements into practical engineering solutions.
  • Strong judgment and accountability when evaluating compliance risk.
  • Comfort serving as a subject-matter expert and escalation point.
  • Balance of compliance rigor with business, cost, and delivery objectives.
  • Proactive communication and cross-functional collaboration.
