What is a summer research associate?
What types of projects does a summer research associate typically work on, and how are assignments determined?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer research associate, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Summer Research Associate vs Summer Intern?
| Aspect | Summer Research Associate | Summer Intern |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Undergraduate or graduate students, often with relevant coursework or research experience | Typically undergraduate students, sometimes with limited experience |
| Work Environment | Research labs, academic institutions, or industry R&D departments | Varies; may include administrative, technical, or research tasks in similar settings |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Universities, research institutes, biotech, pharma, and tech companies | Corporations, nonprofits, government agencies, and academic institutions |
The main difference is that Summer Research Associates are usually more focused on conducting research and may have more specialized roles, while Summer Interns often perform a broader range of tasks and may have less research-specific responsibilities. Both roles provide valuable experience, but the Research Associate position typically emphasizes research skills and project contributions.

Job description
Merrilee Alexander Kick College of Business & Entrepreneurship | Requisition 12006
POSITION SUMMARYThe Merrilee Alexander Kick College of Business & Entrepreneurship at Texas Woman's University seeks an accomplished scholar for the inaugural Merrilee Alexander Kick Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship. The chair holder will anchor the College's growing entrepreneurship portfolio by producing leading-edge scholarship, mentoring faculty and students, and forging research partnerships across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
We seek a highly accomplished advanced Assistant Professor or Associate Professor whose research is already making an impact and whose trajectory points toward national and international leadership in entrepreneurship research. The endowment provides the resources to accelerate that trajectory: a competitive salary, an annual research stipend, and a reduced teaching load. The chair holder will help lead and shape the Merrilee Alexander Kick Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
We evaluate scholarly impact and trajectory over sheer publication volume. Competitive candidates will show a focused, influential body of peer-reviewed work in entrepreneurship and management, clear momentum toward leading journals in the field, and the ability to elevate the research profile of the department, the College, and the Institute.
APPOINTMENT DETAILSAdvanced Assistant Professor or Associate Professor | Beginning Fall 2027
Nine-month appointment with summer research support
Reduced teaching load of two courses per semester
Competitive salary and annual research stipend from endowment funds
Maintain a distinguished research agenda with publications in top-tier entrepreneurship and management journals (FT-50, ABS 4*, or ABDC A/A*).
Exceed AACSB "Scholarly Academic (SA)" criteria through high-impact publications and ongoing research initiatives.
Develop a forward-looking research portfolio that advances entrepreneurship theory and practice.
Pursue opportunities for external grants, foundation funding, or corporate gifts to enhance the entrepreneurship ecosystem, supporting the Merrilee Alexander Kick Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Lead collaborative research initiatives with scholars across the DFW metroplex and beyond.
Teach courses in undergraduate or MBA programs in various modalities (face-to-face, hybrid, or online) with a focus on entrepreneurship topics.
Deliver core entrepreneurship courses.
Mentor and co-author with junior faculty in research design, data analytics, and manuscript development.
Supervise student research projects and provide guidance on entrepreneurial ventures.
Develop innovative pedagogical approaches that inspire and prepare the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Act as an ambassador for the College at academic conferences, policy forums, and corporate entrepreneurship events.
Foster connections between the University and the vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in the DFW metroplex.
Contribute to the strategic direction of the College's entrepreneurship programs and initiatives.
Participate in College and University committees and governance activities as appropriate.
PhD in Entrepreneurship, Management, or closely related field.
A record of scholarship consistent with appointment as an advanced Assistant Professor or as a tenured Associate Professor.
A focused, influential publication record in top-tier journals with a clear and active research pipeline.
Excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching across multiple instructional modalities.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing entrepreneurship education and research.
Experience supervising PhD dissertations, post-doctoral fellows, or other faculty development roles (preferred).
Methodological expertise in longitudinal or panel data (e.g., STATA, Python, R) or another cutting-edge methodological approach (preferred).
