Nestled in the beautiful Berkshire Mountains on Twin Lakes, Salisbury, Connecticut, โ€œIsola Bellaโ€ means Beautiful Island in Italian. Isola Bella was bequeathed to The American School by the late Ferrari Ward and his wife, Muriel Alvord Ward. Both were members of the ASD Board of Directors and Mrs. Ward was the first woman to serve on the board. Through this wonderful gift, the American School became the United Statesโ€™ first school for the deaf to offer a summer program for deaf and hard of hearing youngsters and is the only camp for deaf children in Southern New England. Isola Bella is a scenic island estate that has been turned into a recreational/residential summer camp for deaf children ranging in age from 8 years to 17 years old. A wide variety of activities are offered depending on camperโ€™s skill and interest level. Some of these activities include: archery, arts & crafts, camp studies, swimming, sailing and canoeing, water skiing, overnight camping, hiking, team and non-competitive games and a variety of special trips and projects. The philosophy of the program is โ€œlearning through experience.โ€

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Assistant Camp Waterfront Director

(Summer Camp Isola Bella)

Department: Isola Bella Camps

Supervisor: Waterfront Director & Summer Camp Director

Description: Seasonal, Summer 2026 (not eligible for benefits)

Union or NCB: Non-Collective Bargaining

SCOPE OF DUTIES

The Assistant Waterfront Director supports the Waterfront Director in overseeing all waterfront activities to ensure a safe, fun, and educational environment for campers and staff. This role also involves supervising evening activities and assisting with cabin coverage if needed, and stepping into leadership roles when necessary. The Assistant Waterfront Director reports directly to the Waterfront Director and Camp Director.

  • Assist with daily management of all waterfront activities, including swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.
  • Help supervise, schedule, and support the lifeguards and instructors.
  • Ensure all waterfront rules and safety procedures are consistently followed by campers and staff.
  • Conduct swim tests and skill assessments at the start of camp sessions.
  • Assist in planning and leading waterfront drills, including emergency response simulations.
  • Monitor weather and water conditions to make informed decisions about activity safety.
  • Support the maintenance and care of waterfront equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in administering first aid when necessary and completing incident reports.
  • Supervise campers during evening activities and assist with cabin coverage as needed.
  • Be a visible and positive presence on the waterfront and around camp
  • Step into the Waterfront Directorโ€™s role as needed in their absence.
  • Report directly to the Waterfront Director and Camp Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the camp.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicants must be 21 or older
  • Must have current WATERFRONT lifeguard certification, boating license, small craft safety certification and experience pertaining to operating a waterfront facility.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language is strongly preferred.

SALARY RANGE

  • Will be paid on a stipend basis for the season
  • Employment dates are approximately June 20, 2026 to July 25, 2026
