What is a summer private equity internship?

A Summer Private Equity Internship is a temporary position, typically lasting 8-12 weeks during the summer, where students or recent graduates work with a private equity firm. Interns assist with tasks such as market research, financial modeling, due diligence, and supporting investment teams in evaluating new opportunities. This internship provides hands-on experience in the private equity industry and helps interns develop valuable analytical and business skills. It's a highly competitive role that often serves as a stepping stone to a full-time position in finance or private equity after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a summer private equity internship?

As a Summer Private Equity Intern, you can expect to work on a range of projects such as conducting financial analysis, building valuation models, performing market research, and assisting in due diligence for potential investments. Interns often collaborate closely with analysts, associates, and partners, gaining exposure to live deals and portfolio company management. The internship typically involves both independent tasks and teamwork, providing valuable hands-on experience in the investment process and a glimpse into the day-to-day operations of a private equity firm.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer private equity intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Private Equity Intern, you need strong analytical abilities, financial modeling skills, and a solid understanding of accounting and corporate finance, typically supported by progress toward a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, financial databases like Bloomberg or Capital IQ, and sometimes prior experience with valuation tools are expected. Standout interns demonstrate initiative, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication. These skills are vital for evaluating investment opportunities, supporting deal execution, and contributing meaningfully within a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
