Summer Academy - 2026 Job Posting

• Orientation Day: July 6, 2026; 8 AM - 4 PM  (7.5 hours; must attend)
• Student Days: July 7 through August 6, 2026, Tuesday through Thursday 

Vacation will not be approved during the scheduled summer program dates.   Any time lost due to staff absences may result in termination from the summer program and/or reduction in pay.

Teachers and paras will be paid according to a stipend.  The stipend will be split into two pays (July 24, 2026 and August 21, 2026)

Appoquinimink Summer Academy - Special Education (Grades PreK-12)

Students invited to this program have been identified by their IEP team as being eligible to receive special education support as outlined in their IEP. Special education staff will support students attending both the Extended School Year and 12 Month Programs.

Specialized Programs Summer Academy

Students identified in this program may have moderate to significant cognitive impairments or communication/social/behavioral needs, supports, and services as identified in their IEP. This is inclusive of students attending the RISE, Foundations, THRIVE, LCCE, and LIFE Programs. Training and support will be provided.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - SPED TEACHERS

• Provides a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
• Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
• Establishes and maintains a positive, collaborative rapport and communication with students, school personnel, and parents.
• Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities by communicating expectations of appropriate behavior.
• Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation, and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
• Plans and uses classroom time effectively.
• Implements School Board and school-based policies and procedures to uphold school regulations.
• Integrates technology in instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPED TEACHERS

Below are the qualifications for this position:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Hold or eligible for State of Delaware teacher certification in subject matter to be taught.
• Strong skills in instructional and behavior management strategies appropriate for diverse learners.
• Must be proficient with technology and follow best practices for online instruction.
• Must have access to reliable internet from home site.
• Past satisfactory evaluations.
• Demonstrate knowledge of subject content, curriculum, methodology of effective teaching.
• Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
• Skilled in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborative relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents.
• Demonstrated skill in oral and written communications, excellent human relations skills.
• Safety Care Training preferred

• Assists in providing a safe and encouraging learning environment to meet the students' needs, interests, and abilities.
• Provides support for students with emotional and behavioral needs.
• Plans accommodations and develops instruction to support individual education plans.
• Collaborates with classroom teachers, clinicians, and behavior interventionist to foster a positive learning environment
• Implements de-escalation strategies and manages classroom behavior using safety care training strategies.
• Demonstrates professionalism, maintains confidentiality, accepts constructive feedback, and maintains an atmosphere that promotes student learning.
• Supports the classroom teacher in instruction by engaging in planning, following plans outlined by the teacher, and working with individual students/small groups.
• Supports the classroom teacher in assessment by monitoring independent work, collecting academic/behavioral data, and assisting in keeping accurate/current record of student progress.
• Supports the classroom teacher in organization by performing clerical duties, assisting in gathering/developing instructional materials, and maintaining an organized work environment.

The following provides a brief description of physical requirements for this position:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly talking, expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. The employee must possess normal cognitive abilities including the ability to learn, recall and apply certain practices and policies. Frequently sitting and/or remaining in a stationary position for long periods of time. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

• The work of this class is generally performed in a school environment. Work may require the ability to move around the school and classroom.
