Job description

This position is responsible for:
Assisting with loading, unloading, and sorting donations; moving donations and other materials into the warehouse; and assisting in the set-up, clean-up, and breakdown of the warehouse. He/she may also act in the capacity of a Truck Helper or Driver as needed.
Assists in picking up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick up donated items.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the truck; checks fluid levels regularly; and provides repair work, as needed.
  • Collects and empties trash for the warehouse area; assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the warehouse area; sweeps the floor and cleans the bathrooms.
  • Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures
  • Maintains good relationships with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Help Social Services with freezers and keeping them clean and stocked.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • The working environment is a warehouse without air conditioning and with a cement floor, where a majority of the day is spent. Temperatures vary in the winter and in the summer. There is an air-conditioned warehouse for equipment storage and office space. The position involves going in and out of the air-conditioned space into the warehouse throughout the day.

  • Duties are usually performed seated. Sitting may be relieved by brief or occasional periods of standing or walking

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma/GED preferred but not required; one (1) year of experience driving a heavy-duty truck or large van such as a box truck; OR
  • any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • Valid State Driver's License required
