What is a summer guide?

Summer guides are individuals who lead and assist groups or individuals in outdoor activities, tours, or educational programs during the summer season. They often work at camps, national parks, adventure tour companies, or educational institutions, providing guidance, safety, and information to participants. Their responsibilities can include leading hikes, organizing activities, ensuring safety protocols, and sharing knowledge about the local environment or subject matter. This role is ideal for those who enjoy working outdoors, have strong leadership skills, and are passionate about sharing experiences with others.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer guide, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Summer Guide, you need strong knowledge of local geography, safety protocols, and outdoor activity facilitation, often supported by certifications such as CPR/First Aid. Familiarity with reservation systems, GPS devices, and communication radios is commonly required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, leadership, and the ability to engage and motivate groups are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure guest safety, enhance the experience, and foster trust in dynamic outdoor environments.

What are some common challenges summer guides face when working with groups, and how can they be overcome?

Summer Guides often encounter challenges such as managing diverse group dynamics, keeping participants engaged, and ensuring safety during activities. To address these, successful guides use clear communication, set expectations early, and adapt activities to suit different age groups and interests. Building rapport and staying attentive to individual needs helps foster a positive, inclusive environment. Regular training and teamwork with co-guides also play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges and ensuring a smooth experience for everyone.

Job description

BerryDunn’s Management and IT Consulting Group (MITG) is looking for aManagement and IT Consulting Intern to join our team for the summer. Our Management and IT Consulting Group has a long history of working collaboratively with clients to provide independent and objective consulting services that address challenges associated with organization, management, and information technology. We help our clients create, grow, and protect value through evaluating their use of information systems, streamlining processes, developing management skills, and planning for future technology acquisitions, infrastructure, and resource needs.

You will be immersed in dynamic, in-person learning and get to connect with other interns and experience the company culture firsthand. This full-time summer internship will be based out of our Portland, ME office.

We have internship openings with our Management & Information Technology group for:

  • Summer session running from May 25, 2027, through August 6, 2027.

In order to be considered, you must include your unofficial academic transcription with your application.

As an intern with our group, you will work on a variety of engagements within our core practice areas: healthcare, higher education, IT governance, risk and compliance, commercial, and workforce/well being. We do not expect our interns to have previous experience working in these industries, however, MITG interns should be eager to learn quickly as you work across teams and consulting projects.

You will work alongside our team serving our clients, participate in business development activities, perform research and analysis, and contribute to other value-added tasks for the group.

Your summer internship will fly by as you work on relevant, meaningful engagements, directly contribute to ongoing projects, and learn how to be an effective consultant across different types of clients.

All new team members are partnered with an experienced BerryDunn team member as an advisor to help guide you through your internship. The rest of your team will assign work, answer questions, meet regularly with you and provide constructive feedback as you hone your skills toward becoming a full-time consultant.

An internship with MITG will challenge you, build your communication skills, give you exposure to a variety of client engagements, require you to develop solutions to complex problems, enhance your ability to work on a team, and allow you to gain hands-on consulting experience.

We consider our interns as we would our full-time hires and have a long history of hiring interns as full-time staff consultants after they complete the internship program.

  • Currently enrolled in a BS/BA/MS Degree in one of these areas: business, economics, risk management, information systems audit and control, information technology management, strategic management, management information systems, health science or computer science.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • History of high performance in academics and previous roles.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in consulting
  • Track record of team project and leadership experience.
  • Relevant work experience in one of the fields above is a plus.
  • Drive and initiative to learn.
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship building and teamwork.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
