Summer Distributed Systems Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a summer distributed systems engineer?

To thrive as a Summer Distributed Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science fundamentals, distributed systems concepts, and programming, often supported by coursework or prior internship experience. Familiarity with technical tools such as cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and distributed databases is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication help individuals excel in dynamic team environments. These skills ensure you can design, implement, and troubleshoot scalable systems that support reliable service delivery.

What types of projects does a summer distributed systems engineer typically work on?

Summer Distributed Systems Engineers often get hands-on experience developing and optimizing large-scale, distributed applications that handle high volumes of data and traffic. Projects may include improving system reliability, scaling backend infrastructure, or designing new microservices to support business growth. These projects are usually collaborative, allowing engineers to work closely with senior developers, DevOps teams, and product managers, providing valuable exposure to real-world engineering challenges. Participating in these projects not only helps the company achieve greater system efficiency and scalability but also offers interns meaningful opportunities to learn, contribute, and build skills relevant for future full-time roles.

What is a summer distributed systems engineer?

A Summer Distributed Systems Engineer is typically an intern or temporary team member who works on designing, building, and maintaining distributed computing systems during the summer months. These engineers help create software that runs across multiple computers, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance. They often collaborate with senior engineers to solve complex problems related to data synchronization, system communication, and fault tolerance. This role provides hands-on experience in software engineering, networking, and large-scale system design, making it ideal for students or recent graduates seeking practical exposure.

Senior Engineer, System-Level Design Verification

Job description

Tenstorrent is seeking a Senior Engineer, System-Level Design Verificationย ย to ensure our AI silicon delivers reliable, scalable performance in real workloads. You will validate full-system behavior, from connectivity to throughput, across large distributed compute platforms.ย

This role is hybrid, based out of Toronto, Austin, TX or Belgrade, Serbia.

We welcome candidates at various experience levels for this role. During the interview process, candidates will be assessed for the appropriate level, and offers will align with that level, which may differ from the one in this posting.

Who You Are

  • Experienced verification engineer focused on full-system behavior, not only block-level micro-architecture.
  • Strong at analyzing AI workload performance and hardware interaction end-to-end.
  • Comfortable debugging complex issues with both hardware and software teams.
  • Obsessed with reliability, observability, and operational excellence across compute platforms.

What We Need

  • Validate system connectivity, coherency, and functionality across large, distributed AI compute systems.
  • Measure and tune performance for end-to-end AI workloads to hit silicon targets.
  • Define and evolve observability, diagnostics, and system-level test frameworks.
  • Align verification plans with silicon goals in partnership with hardware and software teams.

What You Will Learn

  • How to validate massive distributed systems purpose-built for advanced AI workloads.
  • Techniques for correlating workload behavior, performance counters, and hardware bottlenecks.
  • How software stacks and hardware co-design come together in state of art AI platforms.
  • How to scale system validation for rapidly evolving architectures and product generations.

Compensation for all engineers at Tenstorrent ranges from $100k - $500k including base and variable compensation targets. Experience, skills, education, background and location all impact the actual offer made.

Tenstorrent offers a highly competitive compensation package and benefits, and we are an equal opportunity employer.
