About Horizons Greater Washington
Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) provides year-round academic enrichment and summer learning opportunities for more than 400 students in grades 1-9. Through long-term partnerships with students, families, schools, and communities, we inspire the joy of learning while supporting academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and confidence.
Position Summary
Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) is seeking a dynamic, creative, and student-centered Saturday Academy STEAM Lead Teacher to lead engaging, hands-on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning experiences for elementary and middle school students during our Saturday Academy. The STEAM Lead Teacher will foster curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking through project-based learning while creating a joyful, inclusive classroom environment where every student can thrive.
The STEAM Lead Teacher works closely with the Site Director to ensure high-quality program implementation and supports Horizons' mission of inspiring the joy of learning, building confidence, and helping students realize their potential.
2026-2027 Program Dates
8 Saturdays: September 19, 2026 - April 10, 2027
2026: Sept 26, Oct 17, Nov 7, Dec. 5
2027: Jan 16, Feb 6, Feb 27, April 3
Schedule
Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (or until student dismissal). In addition, the position includes three hours of planning time for every Saturday you teach, which may be completed remotely to prepare for the three student groups.

Core Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching & Student Engagement
- Deliver engaging, hands-on STEAM lessons
- Create a classroom culture that encourages creativity, innovation, teamwork, curiosity, and problem-solving.
- Prepare materials and organize supplies in advance to ensure lessons run smoothly.
- Guide students through engineering challenges, design projects, coding activities, scientific investigations, and other experiential learning opportunities.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, social, and developmental needs of students.
- Foster positive relationships with students while promoting perseverance, confidence, and a growth mindset.
Classroom & Program Management:
- Establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning. HGW's programs adhere to the Pyramid of Program Quality designed by the David Weikart Center for Youth Program Quality. All HGW staff strive to support the domains of Engagement, Interaction, Supportive Environment, and Safe Environment to support the needs of youth.?
- Inventory and maintain all materials, tools, and equipment
- Supervise students during daily meals and recess, as needed.?
- Share observations and concerns with the Site Director to support student success and continuous program improvement.
- Meet regularly with the Site Director to proactively accomplish goals and problem-solve as issues arise.?
- Collaborate with classroom teachers and staff to support student success and ensure seamless program operations.
- Attend required staff meetings and trainings
- Ensure compliance with all organizational policies, safety procedures, and applicable state regulations.
- Maintain reliable attendance and actively contribute to a positive team culture.
Qualifications
Required
- At least 18 years old
- High school diploma or GED
- Experience teaching elementary and/or middle school students.
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to create an engaging, inclusive learning environment for diverse learners.
- Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Enthusiasm for Horizons Greater Washington's mission and commitment to educational equity.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field
- Experience facilitating project-based, inquiry-based, or hands-on STEAM learning.
- Experience leading youth programs or school operations
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
Pay Rate and Hours
$32.19 per hour.
