Position Overview
Are you someone who can bring enthusiasm, creativity, and compassion to brighten a child's day? Do you believe in the power of play, connection, and community? The YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit is looking for YOU - An energetic and empathetic individual to join our Day Camp Counselor Team. Here everyday is an adventure, and every camper looks to you as a role model.
Whether you're an aspiring teacher, future social worker, outdoor enthusiasts or simply love making a positive impact, this opportunity is packed with transferable skills that will grow your confidence, leadership, and collaboration.
What You'll Do
  • Lead the Fun: Plan and deliver awesome, age-appropriate activities that keep kids engaged, active, and support summer learning.
  • Be a Role Model: Show kids core values (caring, honesty, responsibility, respect, and inclusion) in action - through how you play, lead, and interact every day.
  • Make Safety your Priority: Supervise a group of 6-12 campers and ensure a safe and welcoming space for all.
  • Embrace the Moment: Have fun and be prepared to sing, dance, get a little silly, and lose the game so a kid WINS the day.
  • Create Community: Build strong relationships with campers, families, and fellow staff.
  • Stay Committed: Be part of the full camp experience through September 1, helping create summer memories that last a lifetime.

What you'll need:
  • A positive attitude, a sense of humor, and a deep respect for the youth of all backgrounds.
  • Experience working with children (preferred but not required - we TRAIN you)!
  • High school diploma or equivalent required (must be 18 years or older).
  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Safe certifications (expectations to obtain within 60 days).
  • Must complete successful background screening and health screenings for YMCA.
  • Must be able to walk, stand, sit (including on the floor), and participate in all physical activities for long periods of time.
  • Capability and comfort level to participate in outdoor activities and swimming as guided by camp leadership.
