Starting in September 2027, this role is expected to help build our programs in Applied Artificial Intelligence and to contribute to the development of our recently established Center for Artificial Intelligence Research Computing.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell:
25 miles northwest of Boston in the high-tech corridor of Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Lowell is an R1-rated research university with a national reputation in science, engineering, and technology. UMass Lowell is committed to educating students for lifelong success in a diverse world, and to conducting research and outreach activities that sustain the economic, environmental, and social health of the region and is currently ranked the #1 Public University in Massachusetts by the Wall Street Journal. Currently in the mid-point of a major strategic plan, aimed at strengthening our research excellence, student success, community partnership, and positive campus culture, we actively seek a diverse, talented candidate pool for this position.
The Miner School of Computer & Information Sciences:
The Miner School of Computer & Information Sciences (CIS) was launched in Summer 2022 and named in honor of our alumnus Rich Miner, co-founder of Android. CIS is part of the Kennedy College of Sciences, a vibrant multi-disciplinary home to training and research in the sciences at UML.

The School currently has 22 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, 9 full-time teaching faculty members, and a few adjunct instructors serving almost 1,000 BS students, 200 MS students, and 70 PhD students. Reflecting our strengths in research, the CIS programs include specializations in Robots, CyberSciences, Bioinformatics, and Computational Mathematics. In addition to these Computer Science Programs, our new program in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (AIDA) will be launched in Fall 2026. Our programs through the Graduate & Professional Studies college at UML also offer online MS and BS in Information Technology programs, with over 100 and over 600 students, respectively.

In research, our faculty in CIS has received external research funding from the NSF, DARPA, DOD, DHE, NIH, and multiple industry partners, with research expenditures more than doubled over the last five years. The School has 7 NSF CAREER Award recipients. More information about the School can be found at https://www.uml.edu/Sciences/computer-science/default.aspx .
Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in computer and information sciences or a closely related discipline and must be committed to developing and sustaining externally funded research programs.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong potential to establish and maintain substantial research, teaching, and service, including the ability to publish refereed publications, obtain competitive external grants, and supervise postgraduate students.
  • Applicants should have demonstrated capability of management and leadership that could apply in an academic environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Outstanding candidates with expertise in core areas of AI, including but not limited to Generative AI, Foundation Models, Large Language Models (LLMs), Vision-Language Models (VLMs), World Models, AI Agents, Multimodal Learning, Machine Learning, and Trustworthy AI, are encouraged to apply.
  • The successful candidate is expected to develop and sustain a nationally recognized research program, provide leadership for the newly approved B.S. program in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Teaching responsibilities will include core courses within the school as well as specialized courses aligned with the candidate's areas of expertise.
