Job description

Description
The responsibility of the Professional STEM Tutor is to assist students with math, statistics, computer science, chemistry, or other STEM-related subjects. Professional STEM Tutors work in both our drop-in program (where they work both individually and in small groups with students) and in our one-on-one by appointment program. Professional STEM Tutors will also lead larger, scheduled, group tutoring sessions, as needed. Professional STEM tutors should at the least be well versed in mathematics (from arithmetic to calculus) and statistics. Ability to tutor science or computer science subjects may vary depending on the tutor's background and disciplinary expertise.
Responsibility
Tutor students who request STEM assistance: individual to small group sessions in math/stats drop-in, one-on-one appointments in STEM disciplines. Tutoring may be online or in the center. Tutors will write notes in our tutor management system for individual appointments.
During open appointment blocks, perform various academic support tasks according to tutor's skills and interests as assigned by CLAS management.
Attend training on specific topics related to assisting college students with STEM subjects, assisting students of concern, etc. Training may be in person or online. Meet with program supervisors to discuss other issues.
Facilitate large group tutoring sessions or exam review sessions.
Write notes for all tutoring sessions in appointment tracking system (EAB Navigate).
Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree or higher in a STEM discipline or related area
  • Knowledge of successful strategies for tutoring a diverse college student population
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (especially inclusion of groups historically excluded from STEM fields) as well as anti-racist tutoring praxis
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in person on Suffolk's downtown Boston campus
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Creativity and flexibility in tutoring
  • Experience with EAB Navigate, TutorTrac, WCOnline, or other appointment management Platforms a plus
  • Salary: $40 per hour
