What does a subsurface data analyst do?
On a typical day, a Subsurface Data Analyst gathers and processes geological, geophysical, or petrophysical data to help evaluate subsurface conditions and identify potential resource opportunities. They use specialized software to interpret seismic data, generate subsurface maps or models, and contribute technical findings to multidisciplinary teams. The role often involves preparing reports or data visualizations and participating in project meetings to support engineers, geoscientists, or drilling specialists. Analysts may also be responsible for quality control of incoming data and recommending improvements in data acquisition or interpretation techniques.
What is a subsurface data analyst?
A Subsurface Data Analyst collects, processes, and interprets geological and geophysical data to support exploration and production activities in industries like oil and gas, mining, and environmental science. They work with datasets from sources such as seismic surveys, well logs, and geological models to identify patterns, assess subsurface conditions, and improve decision-making. This role requires expertise in data management, visualization, and analytics tools to ensure accurate and efficient use of subsurface information.
What skills and qualifications are needed to be a subsurface data analyst?
To thrive as a Subsurface Data Analyst, you need a solid background in geology, geophysics, or petroleum engineering, with proficiency in data analysis and interpretation related to subsurface environments. Expertise with technical tools such as Petrel, Kingdom, or Geoteric software, along with experience in handling large datasets, and certifications like GISP or relevant industry training, is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities set outstanding analysts apart. These skills ensure accurate data-driven insights that are vital for resource evaluation and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary energy or environmental teams.

The IT Advisor for Petrophysical & Borehole Data Management will lead enterprise initiatives focused on the management, migration, integration, governance, and business adoption of petrophysical and borehole data solutions. This role will be centered on Landmark DecisionSpace365 Borehole Data Management (BHDM), DSIF-based deployment architecture, cloud-hosted subsurface data platforms, and the enablement of high-quality well log, core, and related subsurface data for technical users across the business.
This position will serve as a senior technical advisor and engagement lead between business users, petrophysicists, geoscientists, data managers, IT, cloud architecture teams, vendors, and project stakeholders. The role will help drive adoption of modern borehole data management workflows, promote the value of centralized and governed petrophysical data, and ensure that subsurface data is searchable, trusted, accessible, and usable across interpretation, modeling, analytics, and operational workflows.
The ideal candidate will combine deep petrophysical data management expertise with practical experience in BHDM / DSIF products, cloud architecture, data migration, quality control, metadata governance, project delivery, stakeholder engagement, and change management. The position requires someone who can translate business needs into actionable technical requirements, guide implementation teams, engage end users, and promote the work being delivered across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and advise on enterprise petrophysical and borehole data management initiatives, with emphasis on BHDM, DSIF, Recall, iPoint, well log repositories, core data, SCAL data, and related subsurface datasets.

- Lead or contribute to data migration efforts from legacy systems such as Recall, iPoint, shared repositories, and other borehole data sources into a modern BHDM environment.
- Define, implement, and improve data ingestion workflows for wireline logs, cased-hole logs, open-hole logs, MWD/LWD data, core data, SCAL data, imagery, documents, and associated metadata.
- Establish and maintain quality control workflows for petrophysical datasets, including validation of headers, curves, units, mnemonics, depth references, data gaps, null values, spikes, flat sections, saturation effects, and metadata completeness.
- Develop and promote business rules, technical assurance protocols, data standards, and governance practices that ensure borehole data integrity, lineage, traceability, and long-term usability.
- Support automated ingestion, validation, approval, publication, search, visualization, export, and transfer workflows for borehole data.
- Work with business users to identify pain points, gather feedback, document requirements, prioritize enhancements, and promote adoption of new data management tools and workflows.
- Create and deliver presentations, workflow demonstrations, training materials, technical documentation, project updates, and communications that explain the value of BHDM / DSIF capabilities to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Help promote the work of the data management organization by communicating project progress, business value, data quality improvements, efficiency gains, and future roadmap opportunities.
- Lead user acceptance testing, workflow validation, issue resolution, and transition-to-operations activities in partnership with business and technical teams.
- Support project planning, risk management, milestone tracking, vendor coordination, dependency management, and stakeholder reporting for complex data management initiatives.
- Troubleshoot data ingestion, access, migration, metadata, quality, search, visualization, export, and user workflow issues.
- Ensure solutions comply with enterprise data governance, cybersecurity, access control, entitlement, and records retention requirements.
