Job description


The Supervisor position is responsible for the safe performance of maintenance, construction, repair, inspection, and operation activities on substation and associated equipment and structures, with regular field presence required to oversee crews and support field operations. You will mentor and develop the team while ensuring compliance with the Standards of Business Conduct and EH&S policies. The Supervisor will foster an accident-free culture, strive for Operational Excellence, maintain an effective Cost Management culture, and enhance the customer experience.
This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
  • Responsible for conducting On the Job training (OJT), effective job briefings and documented job site safety exchanges.
  • From the field, supervise and direct mechanics, engineering inspectors, operators, and subordinate titled personnel in the safe performance of maintenance, construction, repair, inspection, and operational activities on substations and associated equipment and structures.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and assign personnel to perform work based on project schedules and operational needs, while always striving to optimize productivity.
  • Ensure work is performed in accordance with all operating procedures, OSHA laws, safety procedures, and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Mentor and develop personnel while ensuring compliance with the Standards of Business Conduct, EH&S policies, Equal Employment Opportunity, substance abuse policies, security, and all other applicable company policies and procedures.
  • Coach on performance, administer on-the-job training (OJT), provide effective job briefings, perform documented job site safety exchanges (JSSE), and enforce good housekeeping practices in work areas.
  • Enforce all contractual and local work rules and assign personnel to jobs in accordance with the Weekly Work Schedules and in adherence to the station schedules.
  • Interface with various Con Edison departments and personnel who enter substations (i.e.-Electric Operations, Transmission Operations, Central Engineering, etc.).
  • Work a rotating shift schedule
  • Attend daily management meetings to report job progress. Be fully knowledgeable of work scopes and submit Work Permit Requests in a clear and concise manner.
  • Work with the Field Planners and Central Planning group to improve work plans and provide feedback to planners on work plans.
  • Order, coordinate, account for, and ensure availability and timely delivery of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Foster a Zero Accident Culture, embrace Diversity and Inclusion, strive for Operational Excellence, maintain an effective Cost Management Culture, and seek to Enhance the Customers Experience.
  • Ensure all personnel, tools, and material are safely and effectively utilized and the use of Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools is incorporated into daily activities.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.
  • Utilize work management software application such as Engage, Maximo, Datasplice, etc.

Qualifications
Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years related work experience and 2 years of experience in operations, maintenance or construction of power generation, transmission or distribution or equivalent education/experience is required or
  • Associate's Degree and 4 years related work experience and 4 years of experience in operations, maintenance or construction of power generation, transmission or distribution equipment or
  • High School Diploma/GED and 5 years related work experience and 5 years of experience or more in operations, maintenance or construction of power generation, transmission or distribution equipment
Relevant Work Experience
  • Technical experience or working knowledge in the operation, maintenance, construction, inspection, and repair of the electrical transmission and distribution system to include substation operations, switchgear installation, grounding practices, circuit breaker mechanics, and electrical distribution transformers, required.
  • Computer literate and be able to apply practical applications in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and work management systems such as Maximo, Engage and OSS, required.
  • Supervisory experience, required.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, good presentation skills and ability to effectively interact with both internal and external customers, support staff, and various levels of management and union, required.
  • Be detailed oriented, able to work under pressure and handle multiple concurrent assignments, required.
  • Exercise independent judgement and able to render sound business decisions, required.
  • Knowledge in the operation, maintenance, or construction of power generation, transmission, and distribution equipment, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: Respirator Fit Test 1 Year Required
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations
  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be approved to wear SCBA and/or respirator
