What is a subcontractor project manager?

Subcontractor Project Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing and coordinating subcontracted work on construction or engineering projects. They manage relationships between the main contractor and subcontractors, ensuring that work is completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications. Their duties include scheduling, quality control, safety management, and resolving conflicts or issues that arise during the project. Effective communication and organizational skills are essential for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a subcontractor project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Subcontractor Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a background in construction or engineering, and experience coordinating multiple subcontractors, often supported by a relevant degree or PMP certification. Familiarity with project management software like Procore, MS Project, or Primavera, as well as contract administration tools, is typically required. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities help you manage relationships, resolve conflicts, and keep projects on track. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards while maintaining strong partnerships with all stakeholders.

What is the difference between Subcontractor Project Manager vs Construction Supervisor?

AspectSubcontractor Project ManagerConstruction Supervisor
CredentialsProject management certifications, relevant industry experienceConstruction management or trade-specific certifications
Work EnvironmentOversees subcontractors, manages project timelines and budgetsSupervises daily on-site construction activities
Employer & Industry UsageConstruction firms, general contractors, subcontracting companiesConstruction companies, on-site teams

While both roles are vital on construction sites, a Subcontractor Project Manager focuses on coordinating subcontractors and managing project scope, whereas a Construction Supervisor oversees daily on-site activities and ensures safety and quality standards are met.

How does a subcontractor project manager typically coordinate with general contractors and other subcontractors on large projects?

A Subcontractor Project Manager frequently acts as the main point of contact between their team, the general contractor, and other subcontractors. This involves attending regular coordination meetings, ensuring that work aligns with the overall project schedule, and proactively resolving conflicts or dependencies that may arise. Effective communication, documentation, and adaptability are crucial, as priorities and timelines can shift rapidly. Building strong working relationships and staying organized are key to maintaining smooth workflow and meeting project milestones.

Job description

We are currently seeking an Assistant Project Manager to join our team in Stamford, CT. The Assistant Project Manager will help keep the project team aligned around key priorities, including budget management, scheduling, quality, safety, diversity goals, document control, subcontractor coordination, and client service.

You will work closely with project managers, superintendents, project engineers, subcontractors, vendors, architects, engineers, and clients to help ensure the project is delivered with the level of excellence, professionalism, and care that Dimeo is known for.

What You'll Do

  • Support the Senior Project Manager and Project Manager with day-to-day project operations, including schedule, financials, safety, quality, diversity, and overall project goals.
  • Help coordinate and communicate with project team members, including Project Engineers and Assistant Project Engineers, to support strong team performance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assist with project budget tracking, cost reporting, projections, allowances, contingencies, options, labor cost coding, and monthly requisitions for owners and subcontractors.
  • Support the preparation, review, and administration of subcontractor scope outlines, agreements, and related project documentation.
  • Coordinate with field teams, subcontractors, vendors, clients, architects, and engineers to help resolve issues and keep work moving forward.
  • Assist with material management, delivery tracking, submittal compliance, and documentation that supports the project schedule.
  • Participate in scope review meetings, subcontractor meetings, foremen meetings, and project coordination discussions; prepare and distribute accurate meeting minutes as needed.
  • Help verify existing project conditions and incorporate findings into schedule, logistics, scope, and planning efforts.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and accountability of project reporting tools, including the Operations Report.
  • Assist in the execution of Dimeo's Quality Management Program and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Program.

How You'll Work

At Dimeo, project success depends on an integrated team approach. The Superintendent leads key field priorities such as schedule, quality, safety, and logistics, while the Project Manager leads financial management, technical resolution, and project administration. The Assistant Project Manager helps connect these efforts by supporting communication, organization, follow-through, and alignment across the team.

You will be expected to bring a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset; communicate clearly and professionally; and approach each interaction as if you are working directly with a client. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys learning, taking ownership, building strong relationships, and contributing to a team that takes pride in doing the right thing.

What We're Looking For

  • Knowledge of construction management, engineering, and related construction activities, terminology, and processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications, drawings, and project documents to support planning, coordination, and execution.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills with the ability to work effectively with internal teams, subcontractors, vendors, clients, architects, and engineers.
  • Ability to support cost management, schedule coordination, documentation, meeting preparation, and issue resolution.
  • A commitment to safety, quality, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
