What is a stylist in training?

A Stylist In Training is an entry-level position in a salon where individuals learn the skills needed to become a professional stylist. They typically assist experienced stylists with tasks such as shampooing, blow-drying, and preparing clients for services. During this period, they receive hands-on training, observe cutting and coloring techniques, and may gradually begin to work with clients under supervision. This role is designed to help trainees build confidence and competence before advancing to a full stylist position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a stylist in training?

To thrive as a Stylist In Training, you need foundational knowledge of hair cutting, coloring, and styling techniques, typically gained through cosmetology school or apprenticeship. Familiarity with salon tools such as shears, clippers, blow dryers, and scheduling or point-of-sale systems is usually required. Excellent customer service, strong communication, and a willingness to learn help build client trust and accelerate skill development. These competencies ensure you deliver quality service while building a loyal clientele and advancing in your career.

What types of support and mentorship can a stylist in training expect during their initial months on the job?

As a Stylist In Training, you can expect to work closely with senior stylists and salon managers who provide hands-on guidance and feedback as you develop your technical skills and customer service abilities. Most salons pair trainees with experienced mentors and offer structured training programs that include shadowing, supervised practice, and regular performance evaluations. This supportive environment helps you gain confidence, develop your personal style, and prepare for independent work as a full-fledged stylist. Open communication and teamwork are encouraged, ensuring you always have access to advice and support.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
