Studio Stylist information

What is a studio stylist?

Studio stylists are professionals who specialize in creating visually appealing looks for photo shoots, video productions, and other studio-based projects. They select and arrange clothing, accessories, props, and sometimes hair and makeup to achieve a specific style or concept set by the creative team. Studio stylists work closely with photographers, art directors, and models to ensure that each visual element aligns with the project’s goals. Their expertise helps bring creative visions to life and ensures that the final images or footage are cohesive and compelling.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a studio stylist?

To thrive as a Studio Stylist, you need a strong background in fashion styling, garment care, and an eye for detail, often supported by experience or a relevant degree in fashion or design. Familiarity with digital photography equipment, styling software, and inventory management systems is typically required. Creativity, excellent communication, and the ability to collaborate with photographers and creative teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure visually compelling results that meet brand standards and contribute to the success of studio photo shoots.

How does a studio stylist typically collaborate with photographers and creative directors during a photoshoot?

As a Studio Stylist, you work closely with photographers and creative directors to bring the visual concept of a shoot to life. This involves preparing and selecting wardrobe, props, and accessories, arranging them on set, and making adjustments as needed throughout the session. Clear communication and adaptability are essential, as you may need to quickly respond to creative direction or troubleshoot styling challenges to achieve the desired look. Teamwork is central to the role, and building strong relationships with other creatives leads to more effective and inspiring shoots.

What is the difference between Studio Stylist vs Cosmetologist?

Cosmetologists have a broader scope, including skin and nail treatments, and work across various beauty establishments. The roles overlap in credentials and work environment, but their primary focus and scope differ.

How do you become a studio stylist?

To become a studio stylist, individuals typically complete cosmetology or beauty school training and obtain the necessary state licensing or certification. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions and developing skills in hair, makeup, or styling tools can also improve job prospects in a studio environment.

Is it hard to get a job as a studio stylist?

Securing a job as a studio stylist can vary depending on location, experience, and skill level. Building a strong portfolio, gaining relevant certifications, and networking within the industry can improve chances of employment. Entry-level positions may be competitive, but with proper training and a good reputation, opportunities increase.

Job description

Catbird is looking for part-time store Stylists to join the retail team at our DC store!

Catbird Stylists are brand ambassadors and trusted jewelry guides who create memorable, sales-driven experiences. In this role, you will guide customers toward demi-fine jewelry they'll wear every day, while performing Forever Jewelry welding and device-based ear piercings with precision, care, and confidence. Stylists play a critical role in driving conversion, building relationships, and bringing Catbird's values to life on the sales floor.

We have part-time availability open (Saturday & Sunday availability required).

About Catbird

In over 21 years in business, Catbird has become an icon, the ultimate destination for gifts and jewelry. Founded in Brooklyn, NY, Catbird is a mecca for an international cast of shoppers who come to visit the brick and mortar stores of their beloved website. Both our stores and website are filled with a carefully curated selection of designers, including our in-house line of jewelry. Our Catbird line is made in our Brooklyn studio and with a few trusted partners, using ethically sourced materials and conflict-free stones. Highly trained Catbird jewelers oversee every step of the process. We are dedicated to a return to local manufacturing - what our neighborhood was famous for. Catbird is a proud member of the CFDA, certified Made in New York, and No Dirty Gold.

The key to our success is remaining true to our values:

-We believe in being an anti-racist organization and actively championing diversity, inclusion, and equity
-We believe in making and selling things people will want to keep forever and will bring continuous joy.
-We believe in doing everything we can ourselves.
-We believe in always thinking of the long game and not focusing on a quick profit.
-We believe we are the best at what we do and we work hard to make sure we know how to sustain it as we grow.
-We believe in treating everyone (coworkers, customers, vendors) with deep respect, kindness, and honesty.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver a high-touch, sales-focused customer experience that converts browsers into buyers and builds long-term loyalty.
  • Confidently sell Catbird's demi-fine jewelry assortment, recommending pieces based on style, lifestyle, and budget.
  • Perform device-based ear piercings (similar to mall-style piercing systems) while educating customers on jewelry selection, aftercare, and upgrades.
  • Weld Catbird's Forever Jewelry while engaging customers and suggesting complementary purchases.
  • Educate customers on materials, craftsmanship, fit, styling, and care to increase trust.
  • Maintain Catbird's visual and quality standards by keeping the sales floor fully stocked, clean, and inviting.
  • Support daily store operations including receiving, pricing, restocking, merchandising, and inventory maintenance.
  • Work collaboratively with store leadership and teammates to meet sales goals and uphold service standards.
Our Ideal Candidate
  • A retail sales professional with strong customer service instincts; jewelry experience is a plus.
  • Comfortable performing hands-on services including device-based piercing and welding after training.
  • Warm, calm, and confident-able to put customers at ease during personal services.
  • Sales-minded and motivated by helping customers find pieces they'll love and wear daily.
  • A collaborative team player who brings positivity, reliability, and good judgment to every shift.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and proud to maintain a beautiful store environment.
  • Retail positions involve physical requirements that include standing for extended periods, light lifting, reaching, and repetitive wrist and hand movements during tasks like welding permanent jewelry, etc. We're happy to discuss reasonable accommodations to support individual needs.
