Job description

The Ceramics Instructor will guide students in developing their skills, knowledge, and confidence in the ceramic arts. This position will provide instruction in a variety of ceramic processes, including hand-building, pottery wheel techniques, glazing, kiln operation, and firing. The ideal candidate will have strong practical knowledge of ceramics and the ability to communicate artistic concepts and technical processes in a way that is accessible to students with varying levels of experience.
In addition to teaching ceramic techniques, the instructor will create a welcoming and encouraging studio environment where students can experiment, develop their individual artistic styles, and build their confidence as artists. The instructor will also help maintain a safe, organized, and productive ceramics studio.

Job Summary/Primary Purpose: The Pottery Instructor will be responsible for teaching pottery classes, developing curriculum and assessments, and establishing collaborative partnerships within the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for teaching pottery classes, including prep work and clean up.
  • Responsible for running the kiln and getting finished pottery pieces back to participants in a timely manner.
  • Effectively design and implement curriculum, assessment rubrics, and lesson plans for each course taught. A record and summary of activities must be provided to the Kroc Camp, Arts, and Education Manager on a regular basis.
  • Develop and implement ongoing collaborative partnerships for pottery programming with schools and organizations.
  • Required to actively participate in the recruitment and outreach efforts set forth by the Fine Arts Coordinator.
  • Responsible for instruction in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  • Required to attend assigned staff meetings.
  • Willing to teach additional classes and workshops as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts preferred or equivalent qualified experience.
  • Two years' teaching experience required; five years preferred.
  • Evidence of portfolio shown.
  • Evidence of experience in curriculum development.

Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.
  • Must have the ability to work with children, parents, seniors, and staff in a capacity of leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of The Salvation Army.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible.
  • Good communication skills including interpersonal skills.
  • English proficiency required; Spanish language skills helpful.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • Exceptional flexibility and ability to work on multiple projects or tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate and work within a team.
  • Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • General computer knowledge is required to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state in which you reside. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must successfully complete Safe from Harm training within 30 days of hire as established by The Salvation Army. Must be knowledgeable about kiln use and set up.

Physical requirements include:
  • Satisfactory speaking, hearing and vision ability, and excellent manual dexterity.
  • Lifting, pulling and pushing of materials up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires bending, squatting and walking.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.

Working Conditions: The work environment is a community center with light to moderate traffic and noise levels. For other duties of this job, such as outdoor special events and community center activities, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment at these events is usually moderate to loud.
The pay rate for this position is $23.00 per hour.
