Job description

The student assistant:

  • Works at the front desk of the JAA office (Summerfield Hall 315, Spahr Engineering Library 1310, 117 Stauffer-Flint) and oversees the reception area.
  • Answers phone calls, responds to emails, and greets in-person visitors.
  • Provides accurate information about our services and KU to students, parents, guests, faculty, and staff in a timely manner.
  • Assists current students with scheduling academic advising appointments.

  • Supports JAA through office organization, printing, copying, scanning, mail distribution, document creation, data entry, and other projects.
  • Utilizes various technologies and software to accomplish job responsibilities.
  • May be responsible for opening and/or closing the office.

Jayhawk Academic Advising (JAA) is a part of the Centers for Orientation and Academic Advising Programs, a unit reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Success. JAA provides comprehensive academic advising services for new and currently enrolled undergraduate students including prospective student application coaching in all undergraduate majors and selected graduate programs across the University. Our organization is staffed by professional advisors, support staff, graduate assistants and student assistants. 

The student assistant (SA) supports those efforts through administrative duties and works closely with the Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, and other SAs. Front desk staff will interact with all members of JAA, including professional staff, graduate assistants, and student teams. The SA position requires working with offices and individuals throughout the University.
