Advancement student writers work with the University Communications and Marketing (UCM) Student News Bureau Director and Director of Content Strategy and Publications, write and edit content for OHIO Today (OHIO's alumni magazine) and other UCM publications including OHIO Today News, Ohio Employee News and others.
Job Profile
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Performs a variety of tasks to support University Communications & Marketing. Duties may include writing and editing communications and news stories, managing social media content, updating websites and multimedia content, designing promotional materials, supporting marketing campaigns, and assisting with event communications.
Level Summary
Performs basic tasks and assists with administrative or operational duties under supervision. Roles are entry-level and aimed at providing exposure to workplace environments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Limited supervisory responsibilities. May supervise other student workers.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
No budgetary responsibility.
Problem Solving:
Addresses routine, well-defined problems under supervision.
Independence of Action:
Works under close supervision.
Communication and Collaboration:
Communicates primarily with supervisor and peers. Collaborates with team members to accomplish tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled for classes at Ohio University, Hocking College, another post-secondary education institution, or a secondary school during the current semester, immediate previous semester, or immediate upcoming semester. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks within deadlines. Basic knowledge of office software and communication tools. Departments may have specific minimum requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Junior or senior, majoring in journalism, communications, marketing, English or similar subject. This is intended to be a role for undergraduate students, but students pursuing a master's degree may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Past experience with magazine production (student media or otherwise).

Due to the potential for a conflict of interest, students who are currently active members of, or contributors to, any news media organization are not eligible to apply.
Working Condition/Physical Demands:
This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.
