Student Veterinary information

What is a student veterinary?

Student veterinarians are individuals currently enrolled in a veterinary medicine program, training to become licensed veterinarians. They learn about animal health, diseases, treatments, and surgical procedures through classroom instruction, laboratories, and hands-on clinical experiences. Student veterinarians often work under the supervision of licensed veterinarians during their training, gaining practical skills and knowledge necessary for their future careers. Upon completing their studies, they must pass licensing exams to practice as veterinarians.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a student veterinary?

To thrive as a Student Veterinary, you need foundational knowledge in animal biology, clinical procedures, and veterinary ethics, typically gained through enrollment in a veterinary program. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, diagnostic imaging tools, and veterinary management software is often required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and a genuine compassion for animals set exceptional students apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for effective animal care, learning in clinical settings, and building a successful veterinary career.

Job description

Woodburn Veterinary Clinic is a progressive small animal hospital with sister clinic close by to allow additional mentoring and experience.  Both clinics are located close to the beach in central Oregon and a lot of outdoor activities.  At each location we have multiple doctors that are excited to mentor with a good variety of medical and surgical cases.  Both practices have a comfortable, family atmosphere with great clients and staff.

Students will work closely with the supervising veterinarian to gain experience in gathering patient histories, performing physical exams, creation of treatment plans, diagnostics, dentistry services, observing/assisting or performing surgical procedures, and medical management of patients. In addition to practicing their clinical skills, student externs will have the opportunity to practice their communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Woodburn Veterinary Clinic are offered to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
