Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center (LVMC) at Iowa State University is seeking a skilled and motivated Medical Technologist to join our diagnostic laboratory team. If you thrive in a fast‑paced clinical environment, enjoy hands‑on diagnostic work, and want to support cutting‑edge patient care across many species including companion animals, livestock, exotics, and wildlife this role offers a unique and rewarding opportunity. You will play a vital role in generating accurate, timely results that clinicians rely on for diagnosis and treatment.

Position Details:

  • Full time position

  • Location: College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa

  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00AM – 5:00PM , with rotating 4 hour shift on Saturday (9am - 12pm).

What you will do:

Diagnostic Testing

  • Perform diagnostic testing across hematology, chemistry, serology, urinalysis, blood bank/immunohematology, parasitology, cytology, and STAT/after‑hours procedures.

  • Evaluate, interpret, and verify test results while recognizing species‑specific variations across domestic, exotic, and avian patients.

  • Prepare cytology samples, perform manual differentials, manual CBCs, and CSF cell counts.

  • Enter test orders and patient demographic information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and assist clinicians and pathologists with data retrieval.

  • Prepare and package specimens for referral testing to external laboratories.

Quality Assurance & Instrumentation

  • Perform daily/weekly instrument maintenance, calibrations, and troubleshooting to maintain accurate and dependable results.

  • Conduct and document all required quality control procedures across laboratory sections.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant work environment following biosafety and chemical safety guidelines.

Training & Collaboration

  • Train veterinary students, veterinary technicians, vet tech students, residents, and new employees in laboratory testing techniques and instrumentation.

  • Review results generated by students and technicians for accuracy.

  • Work collaboratively with clinicians, pathologists, technicians, and hospital support teams to ensure seamless patient care.

Operational Support

  • Monitor and maintain inventory of laboratory reagents and supplies.

  • Support after‑hours or rotating shifts as needed to meet clinical hospital demands.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a diagnostic lab.

  • Experience training students or new employees.

  • Experience with laboratory information systems (LIS).

  • Experience performing instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.
