What is a student nurse PCT?

Student Nurse Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are nursing students who work in healthcare settings, such as hospitals or clinics, to provide basic patient care under the supervision of registered nurses. Their duties often include assisting patients with daily activities, measuring vital signs, collecting specimens, and maintaining patient hygiene. This role helps student nurses gain hands-on clinical experience while continuing their education, and it provides valuable support to the nursing staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a student nurse PCT?

To thrive as a Student Nurse Patient Care Technician (PCT), you need a foundational knowledge of patient care, basic nursing procedures, and current enrollment in a nursing program. Familiarity with medical equipment, electronic health records (EHRs), and basic life support (BLS) certification are commonly required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and compassion help Student Nurse PCTs provide effective support to both patients and healthcare teams. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring patient safety, quality care, and smooth clinical operations while building a foundation for future nursing roles.
