Job description

ATC Healthcare is looking for School Nurses!  The SCHOOL NURSE provides nursing services to the student population in various environments. The school Nurse works cooperatively with the school staff, parents, and guardians to provide for the health care needs of students. The school Nurse works under the supervision of the chief school nurse and/or school principal. 

Job Description: 

School-Based Nurses-

(Exceptional Student Education and General Education)

School-Based Nurses shall adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Work under the direction of a DPSCD Registered Nurse.
  • Adhere to and document the bell schedule of the assigned school on timesheets unless approval
  • for alternate hours has been granted by the Nursing Supervisor.
  • Assess each assigned student daily and correlate assessment areas with the student’s diagnosis.
  • Ensure tracheotomy students have appropriate equipment including trach care kits, portable
  • suction machines, trach tubes, and suction catheters.
  • Provide general nursing services within the assigned school building.
  • Check medical equipment daily for proper functioning and notify the DPSCD Registered Nurse
  • if equipment is missing or not operational.
  • Provide first aid in medical emergencies.
  • Notify parents or guardians of illnesses, injuries, or incidents while the student is under care.
  • Nurses shall follow universal precautions, isolation techniques, PPE requirements, and all sound
  • nursing policies and procedures.

Documentation shall be timely and accurate and include:

• Medication administration

• Treatments performed

• Monthly data reporting

• Communication regarding communicable disease symptoms

• Any additional required documentation

EDUCATION

  • LPN/LVN: Graduate of an accredited Diploma, Associate or Baccalaureate School of Nursing.
  • LPN/LVN: Graduate of an accredited licensed practical/vocational school of nursing.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE SCHOOL NURSE POSITION:

  • LPN/LVN: Graduate of an accredited Diploma, Associate or Baccalaureate School of Nursing.
  • Current and unrestricted license as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of practice.
  • At least one year experience as a nurse in the school setting.
  • CPR as required by client facility; health and screening tests as required by specific facilities and/or regulatory agencies.
  • Must love kids!

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complies with ATC policies/procedures.
  • Complies with client facility nursing policies/procedures.
  • Documents accurately and completely services provided.
  • Maintains confidentiality relative to patient care and facility practices in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and/or other applicable standards.
  • Communicates information effectively to appropriate personnel.
  • Orders nursing and other supplies as requested.
  • Provides required care while maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment.
  • Provides patient services in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that considers cultural diversity and age appropriateness so that autonomy, rights, and dignity are preserved.
  • Provides nursing care and first aid to ill students.
  • Initiates emergency care as appropriate to the circumstance.
  • May ride the school bus as needed to accompany medically fragile students.
  • Serves as an intermediary between school, home, physician, and social agencies regarding the health status of students.
  • Assists in the health education of students by acting as a resource and consultant to teaching staff.
  • Coordinates appropriate referrals for students with community agencies or programs.
  • Identifies and recommends students for placement in various health programs.
  • Complies and makes appropriate referrals regarding applicable health laws, immunization, and communicable diseases.
  • Maintains competency by participating in continuing education programs and meets state specific requirements.
  • Complies with accepted ethical conduct and professional standards of nursing practice as set forth by the American Nurses Association or equivalent nursing organization.
