Salary Range: Up to $92,644/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience, and qualifications.

Job Summary

The Enterprise Database Specialist oversees the development, utilization, and maintenance of the institutional database, including data and system security in accordance with hardware and software requirements, UT San Antonio user and client objectives, and critical databases that impact university-wide deployments. They create, test, administer, and report on database-related procedures and correspondence. The position manages database utilities, monitors relationships between database users and applications, and maintains the university's databases across multiple platforms and computing environments. They apply their understanding of relational database concepts and query languages to design summary or aggregation tables supporting analyses and collaborate with technology and infrastructure staff to identify data relationships and functional requirements. They analyze and resolve issues related to information flow and content. The role also maintains database support tools, tables, dictionaries, recovery and backup procedures, conducts data modeling studies, develops detailed data models, and keeps data models and entityโ€‘relationship diagrams up to date.

Core Responsibilities
  • Supports departmental operations in a high-production environment by proactively managing the performance, optimization, integrity, and security of institutional databases and systems (e.g., SIS).
  • Collaborates with the technical lead to advise management on university database and technology matters supporting faculty, staff, and students. Consults with and advises users of various databases. Assigns personnel to various projects and oversees their activities.
  • Assists with setting up, monitoring, and maintaining disaster recovery solutions for enterprise production databases.
  • Manages tests and provides support to multiple enterprise-wide database systems and applications.
  • Designs, creates, installs, and maintains highly available and secure enterprise database instances, including database architecture, database backโ€‘ups, creation of databases, and database objects such as tables, indexes, views, triggers, and stored procedures to support enterpriseโ€‘level applications like the Student Information System.
  • Provides description of codes database and identifies the database management system or guides others in coding the database description.
  • Ensures high availability of databases in a Microsoft Cluster, Oracle RAC, or similar environment. Develops and enforces standards and procedures for database maintenance, documentation, and configuration.
  • Ensures databases are monitored and appropriate measures/actions taken to ensure the integrity of the databases, including security and privacy issues.
  • Modifies database programs to increase processing performance and performance tuning.
  • Assists in planning the database environment to include database capacity planning, processing, capacity, storage capacity, backup capacity, and future needs/requirements.
  • Assists in projecting longโ€‘range requirements for database administration in conjunction with the Enterprise Database Administrator, managers in the information systems function, and business function managers.
  • Works as a member of the technology team to assist in providing maximum availability and support for information technology systems.
  • Assures the timely completion of the database project within the estimated costs.
  • Consults on server design, coordinates changes to server application, and performs successful upgrades and implementation of existing and emerging technologies in database and application systems environment.
  • Schedules and performs installation and upgrades of enterpriseโ€‘level databases and applications, and maintains them in accordance with established information technology policies and procedures.
  • Assists and conducts routine audits of enterprise databases and systems to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  • Creates and maintains documentation about the university database environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Five (5) years of related work experience, including experience with Ellucian Banner.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Working Conditions
  • Office and Data Processing Environment. Occasional exposure to extreme cold and potential electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate. Occasional evening, weekend, and onโ€‘call work. Occasional travel to meetings, training sessions, or multiple universityโ€‘owned campuses and leased spaces.
Physical Demands
  • Medium work involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. It also requires the ability to push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations. The role demands close visual acuity to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects or parts, operating machinery (including inspection), using measurement devices, and assembling or fabricating parts at close distances. Regularly, you will need to stand, walk, use your hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Occasionally, you may need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, push, pull, lift, manipulate with fingers, grasp, feel, and perform repetitive motions. Repetitive motions may involve the wrists, hands, and fingers, including reaching overhead or at or below shoulder level.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employeeโ€™s responsibility.
