Job description

Position Title: Behavior Technician (school year position)
Program: Polaris Center
General Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Principal and the Assistant Principal, the Behavior Technician manages and intervenes with students who are demonstrating unacceptable behavior within the school setting. Promotes a positive learning environment for all students. Maintains database and generates regular reports on behavioral interventions and outcomes.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Follows prescribed behavioral intervention plans (BIP's) for students.
2. Utilizes program's behavioral management system and is ready to respond to and manage varying levels of maladaptive student behavior (mild, escalation, crisis stages). Interventions may include but are not limited to the following: redirecting, restating expectations, collaborative problem solving, planned ignoring, therapeutic walk or cool-down time, securing the environment, separating students, escort or protective hold.
3. Supervises individuals or small groups of students who cannot be maintained within the classroom and have been placed in alternative learning settings within the school program due to their disruptive, non-compliant or high risk behaviors. 
4. Assists students with completing assigned class work and make-up work.
5. Monitors students during meal times, class changes, in hallways and outside the building as needed.
6. Performs routine security checks of students upon arrival at school or upon student's return to program after AWOL from building.
7. Collects and enters into computer daily behavioral data for each student served.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High school diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred.
Requires knowledge of and experience using effective behavior intervention and management strategies with significantly emotionally disturbed adolescents. Must have ability to perform duties in a calm non-threatening manner, with a diverse population of clients and fellow workers.
















Incentives may be offered to employees who obtain and maintain a CT DMV public service license once employed.  Other job-related certifications required include Safety Care Training and CPR/First Aid.

Working Conditions 
Requires large amount of walking to monitor students. Occasionally requires rigorous physical effort to deal with/escort/utilize protective holds with aggressive emotionally disturbed students (up to 200lbs), according to approved techniques.
