Position Summary
This position supports the head coach in leading and developing a competitive athletic program that promotes student growth, teamwork, discipline, and school pride. The assistant coach works collaboratively with the head coach to create a safe, inclusive, and high-expectation environment where student-athletes develop skills, character, and leadership while representing Storm Lake with integrity
Essential Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a structured, competitive program aligned to district and state guidelines.
  • Teach sport-specific skills, strategy, conditioning, and teamwork.
  • Promote academic accountability and character development among student-athletes.
  • Establish clear expectations for conduct, sportsmanship, and effort.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, families, staff, and the community.
  • Ensure safety, compliance, and adherence to district and athletic association policies.
  • Model professionalism, integrity, and positive leadership.

Required Licensure
All coaches (paid or volunteer) must hold a valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE).
Minimum requirements include:
  • At least 18 years of age and a high school diploma or equivalent
  • CPR certification
  • NFHS concussion training
  • Mandatory reporter training
  • Completion of an approved 55-hour coaching course (or equivalent coursework)

Authorization must remain current and in good standing. Candidates may be hired before obtaining authorization, but must complete all requirements and secure Iowa Coaching Authorization within a district-established timeline.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the sport and coaching principles.
  • Ability to motivate and develop student-athletes.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Required coaching authorization and certifications (as applicable).

Terms of Employment
This is a stipend position for the designated season. Employment terms, salary, benefits, and evaluation procedures are established by the Storm Lake Community School District Board of Education and applicable agreements. Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory performance and compliance with district policies and state and federal regulations.
