Position Overview: Student Nursing

As a Student Nursing Aide, you'll work under the delegation, direction, and supervision of a licensed nurse, performing a variety of nursing duties based on your completed coursework, demonstrated competencies, and the needs of the care team and residents. This role provides valuable clinical experience while supporting residents on their recovery journey in a long-term care and rehabilitation environment.

Student Nurse Functions

May include the following duties under licensed nurse supervision:

  1. Obtain vital signs, glucometer readings, and pulse oximetry
  2. Assist residents with feeding
  3. Perform dressing changes limited to simple bandaging (no wet-to-dry or sterile dressing changes per NHS)
  4. Maintain ostomies (colostomy and urostomy), including measuring and wafer application
  5. Provide restorative care, including ambulation with gait belt, walker, crutches, or wheelchair
  6. Perform active and passive range of motion (ROM) exercises and contracture care
  7. Perform peripheral venous phlebotomy for lab analysis
  8. Apply oxygen via nasal cannula
  9. Initiate and discontinue nebulizer treatments (excluding racemic epinephrine and residents with suspected or confirmed COVID-19)
  10. Administer routine screening tests and immunizations (e.g., flu and TB)
  11. Document all procedures and medications in the electronic medical record and paper records as delegated
  12. Administer routine medications within approved scope
  13. Participate in quality assurance initiatives for the nursing services department
Qualifications:
  1. Currently enrolled Nursing Student in an approved school of nursing program
  2. Successfully completed coursework in Nursing Fundamentals, Pharmacology, and Medication Administration
  3. Documentation from school verifying completed coursework required
  4. Demonstrated competency within the scope and guidelines of the Board of Nursing for Nursing Student Aide
  5. Must be at least 18 years of age
  6. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English
  7. Patience, tact, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude toward the elderly and disabled
