Sts Cardiac Database information

What is the STS Cardiac Database?

The STS Cardiac Database is a comprehensive clinical registry maintained by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) that collects data on cardiac surgical procedures performed at participating hospitals. It is widely used to track outcomes, improve quality of care, and support research in cardiac surgery. Hospitals and clinicians use the database to benchmark their performance, identify areas for improvement, and contribute to the advancement of heart surgery practices. Participation in the STS Cardiac Database helps institutions meet reporting requirements and enhances patient safety.

What are the main responsibilities of someone working with the STS Cardiac Database?

Professionals managing the STS Cardiac Database are typically responsible for collecting, entering, and validating data related to cardiac surgery cases to ensure accuracy and compliance with national standards. They often collaborate closely with surgeons, nurses, and quality improvement teams to provide reliable data that supports hospital accreditation and performance improvement initiatives. Daily tasks may include abstracting clinical information from patient records, submitting data to the STS National Database, and participating in audits or data reviews. Attention to detail and effective communication skills are essential, as the data is used for benchmarking and regulatory reporting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an STS Cardiac Database manager?

To thrive as an STS Cardiac Database Manager, you need expertise in clinical data abstraction, cardiac surgical terminology, and a background in nursing or health information management. Familiarity with the STS National Database platform, electronic medical records, and relevant certifications (such as Certified Clinical Data Manager) are typically required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring data accuracy and collaborating with clinical teams. These competencies are essential to maintain precise reporting, support quality improvement initiatives, and uphold regulatory compliance in cardiac care programs.
