Structured Cabling Tn information

What is a structured cabling technician?

Structured Cabling Technicians are professionals who install, maintain, and troubleshoot the cabling infrastructure used for data, voice, and video communications in buildings and campuses. They work with various types of cables, such as fiber optics and copper, to ensure reliable network connectivity. Their responsibilities often include reading blueprints, adhering to industry standards, labeling cables, and testing systems to guarantee optimal performance. These technicians play a vital role in supporting IT networks and telecommunications systems for businesses and organizations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a structured cabling technician?

To thrive as a Structured Cabling Technician, you need knowledge of cabling standards, installation techniques, and electrical systems, typically supported by a high school diploma and relevant certifications like BICSI or manufacturer-specific credentials. Familiarity with tools such as cable testers, punch-down tools, and labeling systems is essential for efficient and accurate installations. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you excel when troubleshooting and collaborating with team members or clients. These skills ensure reliable network infrastructure, minimize downtime, and support seamless technology operations for organizations.

What are common challenges faced by a structured cabling technician during installation projects?

Structured Cabling Technicians often encounter challenges such as working in tight or difficult-to-access spaces, adhering to strict building codes, and managing multiple cable types and pathways to avoid interference. Coordinating with other trades and project teams is also essential to ensure that timelines are met and that cabling does not conflict with other systems. Staying up-to-date with rapidly evolving technology standards and troubleshooting unexpected issues on-site are important aspects of the role, requiring adaptability and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Structured Cabling Tn vs Network Technician?

AspectStructured Cabling Tn

Structured Cabling Tn specialists design, install, and maintain comprehensive cabling systems for networks, focusing on infrastructure. Network Technicians troubleshoot, repair, and support existing network hardware and connections. While both roles require knowledge of cabling and networking, Structured Cabling Tn professionals focus on planning and installation of entire systems, often with certifications like BICSI, whereas Network Technicians handle day-to-day network issues. Both roles are essential in the industry, but their focus and responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Level 3 Low Voltage Technician

Critical Edge, Inc. | Jonesboro, AR / Memphis, TN

About the Role

Critical Edge is a physical security integrator serving municipalities, healthcare systems, industrial facilities, and commercial clients across Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. We design and install video surveillance, access control, and intercom systems, and we're growing our field team to support larger, more technically complex projects.

The Level 3 Low Voltage Technician is our most experienced field role below Lead Technician. This person works independently on complex installs, mentors junior techs, and can be trusted to represent Critical Edge on-site with minimal supervision — including on multi-phase enterprise projects.

What You'll Do

  • Install, terminate, and commission IP camera systems, access control hardware, and intercom systems with minimal oversight
  • Lead the technical execution of assigned projects, coordinating with the Lead Technician and Project Manager on sequencing and site logistics
  • Program and configure access control panels, credentials, and door hardware (readers, strikes, maglocks, REX devices) across single- and multi-door systems
  • Configure and troubleshoot VMS platforms (Genetec, and camera-side platforms from Motorola, Hanwha, and i-PRO)
  • Pull, terminate, and test structured cabling (Cat6, fiber where required) to industry standards
  • Diagnose and resolve system issues in the field — network connectivity, power, device failures — without escalating routine problems
  • Mentor Level 1 and Level 2 technicians on-site, reviewing their work for quality and code compliance
  • Read and work from architectural drawings, riser diagrams, and system designs; flag discrepancies before they become install problems
  • Maintain accurate as-built documentation, device inventories, and commissioning records for each site
  • Represent Critical Edge professionally with client staff — facilities managers, IT contacts, and site personnel — during install and turnover
  • Travel to job sites across our service area, including multi-day trips for out-of-town or multi-site projects

What You Bring

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in low voltage/security systems installation, with at least 2 years working at a lead or senior technician level
  • Working knowledge of access control systems (any major brand; Genetec, Software House, Lenel, or similar strongly preferred)
  • Experience with IP camera systems and VMS platforms — prior exposure to Genetec, Motorola, Hanwha, or i-PRO is a plus
  • Solid understanding of structured cabling standards and basic networking (IP addressing, VLANs, PoE)
  • Comfortable reading construction drawings and low-voltage system schematics
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally, including occasional overnight trips
  • Strong communication skills — this role interacts directly with clients, not just other technicians
  • Manufacturer certifications (Genetec, ASSA ABLOY, Motorola, Hanwha, i-PRO, Commend) preferred but not required at hire; Critical Edge will support certification training

Physical Requirements

Ability to work at heights (ladders, lifts), in ceilings and crawlspaces, and lift up to 50 lbs. Comfortable working in both indoor commercial environments and outdoor/industrial settings.
