BRUDIS & ASSOCIATES, INC. (BAI) is a multidiscipline engineering firm providing consulting services to public and private sector clients in the Maryland, Virginia, and District of Columbia region. Since 1992, BAI has provided comprehensive, innovative and effective solutions to our clients’ transportation, stormwater, and infrastructure needs.

BAI is actively seeking a Project Engineer for the Structural Division in our Columbia, Maryland office.

Job Summary:

The Project Engineer will work under the direction of the Project Manager and will be the lead designer / inspection team leader for a variety of structures and bridge projects. The Project Engineer will work collaboratively, or independently, with an inspection team or design group on a wide-range of small or large scale multi-discipline projects for state, county, or local jurisdictions. Job requires analytical thinking, adaptive and independent problem solving, creativity, innovation, and ability to utilize junior design engineers to complete task assignments. The successful candidate shall be dependable, open-minded, focused, and attentive to details including: overall QA/QC, design quality and accuracy, project schedules, and project budgets. This is a senior-level position offering autonomy and a path for management-level opportunities within BAI.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide structural design experience and act as a mentor to junior staff, while being instrumental in helpig to grow a strong structural design team
  • Lead designer for project development including but not limited to: bridge, culvert noise barrier, and retaining walls design, bridge deck repair/replacement, bridge substructure and superstructure rehabilitation/repair, structural load ratings, parking structures, building rehabilitation/repair;
  • Team leader for condition inspection of bridges, culverts, sign structures, high mast light structures, etc.
  • Prepare design calculations, contract drawings and specifications, project cost estimates, and also lead and direct junior staff for the same efforts
  • Represent BAI in project progress and review meetings and also participate in project field visitslt;/li>

Knowledge, Skills and Minimum Requirements:

  • BSCE in Civil Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum Three (3) years of design experience and two (2) years bridge inspection experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Maryland (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • Completion of NHI 130055 Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges
  • Completion of NHI 130053 Bridge Inspection Refresher Training if NHI 130055 was completed more than 5 years prior
  • Strong understanding of AASHTO design guidelines
  • Proficiency using structural design software (LARS, Merlin-Dash, Descus, STAAD, etc.)
  • Proficient using Microstation and associated design software with strong computer skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to provide guidance and share technical knowledge with entry-level engineers
  • Ability to work well within a project team by building relationships and teamwork
  • Experience working on Structural projects for DOT/DPW projects for state, county, city, or local municipalities; experience with MDOT SHA, MDTA, and MD County DOT/DPW projects is preferred
  • Detail oriented with strong skills in structural analysis, steel design, and concrete design as it relates to transportation structures
