What is the difference between Structure Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructure EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Structural or Civil Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentDesigning and analyzing building structures, working on projects like bridges, towersBroader scope including transportation, water resources, and infrastructure projects
Industry UsageSpecialized in structural integrity and safety of buildings and structuresEncompasses various infrastructure projects, including structural aspects

Structure Engineers focus specifically on designing and analyzing the structural components of buildings and infrastructure, ensuring safety and stability. Civil Engineers have a broader role, covering multiple aspects of infrastructure development. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and project focus.

What exactly does a structural engineer do?

A structural engineer designs, analyzes, and oversees the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe and stable. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and materials knowledge to create plans that meet safety codes and project requirements.
