Can you make $500,000 as a civil engineer?

As a civil engineer, earning $500,000 annually is possible but typically requires senior-level positions, extensive experience, specialized skills, or working on large-scale projects. Most civil engineers earn between $60,000 and $120,000 per year, with higher salaries often found in managerial or consulting roles in certain regions or industries.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and in high-demand industries. Executive-level engineering roles or those with significant managerial responsibilities may also reach this compensation level.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in large corporations or high-demand industries.

What is the difference between Structure Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructure EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Structural or Civil Engineering, PE license often preferredBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license common
Work EnvironmentDesigning and analyzing building structures, working on projects like bridges, towersBroader scope including transportation, water resources, and infrastructure projects
Industry UsageSpecialized in structural integrity and safety of buildings and structuresEncompasses various infrastructure projects, including structural aspects

Structure Engineers focus specifically on designing and analyzing the structural components of buildings and infrastructure, ensuring safety and stability. Civil Engineers have a broader role, covering multiple aspects of infrastructure development. Both roles require similar credentials but differ in scope and project focus.

What exactly does a structural engineer do?

A structural engineer designs, analyzes, and oversees the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe and stable. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) tools, and materials knowledge to create plans that meet safety codes and project requirements. Structural engineers often collaborate with architects and construction teams throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

Purpose

Divergent aims to revolutionize industrial manufacturing in the aerospace and defense industries through our DAPS (Divergent Adaptive Production System) technology. Our patented production system incorporates Nodes - 3D-printed metal connectors - with lightweight materials to create strong and efficient complex structures. Divergent's technology eliminates tooling and drives radical innovation, capital reduction, and sustainability in vehicle manufacturing.

Divergent is seeking a skilled and motivated engineer to support the next generation of industry-leading aerospace vehicle development. We're committed to transforming vehicles' structural systems away from traditional manufacturing by using new materials and new technologies.  To do this, we need a forward-looking and innovative engineer who will help shape the future of automotive structures.

Structures Engineer will be responsible for the product development through entire product life cycle, from program kick-off to start of production. In this role, you will create and manage CAD models, FEA models and BOM's for individual Nodes as well as full structures. You will develop and maintain engineering documentation, including system level DFMEA and DVP and collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand manufacturing/design capabilities and limitations and to ensure proposed design changes can be efficiently produced and assembled. As DAPS Product Engineer, you will also act as technical liaison between Divergent and its customers, to ensure product requirements are concurred, tracked and achieved.

The Role
  • Create and manage CAD designs of the components, as well as the BOM structure.
  • Build up and analyze FE Models of Node-based vehicle structures applications including validation using hand calculations and optimization.
  • Present design summary/reports efficiently at meetings and to other relevant engineers or external parties.
  • Create, refine, and execute new technical solutions for automotive structures to support external customer programs and joint development efforts.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment within the DAPS Product Engineering team and cross-functionally with other disciplines to efficiently design and release structures that are optimized for mass, efficient production, and assembly.
  • Work cross-functionally to implement cost reduction, methods and product improvements, and support prototype and production build activities.
  • Maintain technical documentation, including best practices and lesson learned.
  • Support vehicle builds and product development testing and troubleshooting.
Basic Qualifications
  • Ability to lawfully access information and technology that is subject to US export controls
  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in structure design.
  • CAD experience creating detailed models. Siemens NX is a plus.
  • PLM experience. Teamcenter is a plus.
  • Experience in structural analysis.
  • Experience in analysis software packages such as Nastran, Optistruct, and/or LS-Dyna.
  • Solid understanding of linear/nonlinear behaviors of advanced materials (composites, adhesives, metals) to achieve lightweight structural solutions.
  • Experience with aerospace load applications and MIL-STDs.
  • Outstanding comprehension of solid mechanics.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and motivated self-starter who can manage personal workload and execution to tight schedule.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience interfacing with engineering, testing, and manufacturing groups to understand system designs and the associated constraints.
  • Experience with DFMEA, DVP, control plans, PPAP and APQP.
  • Knowledge of overall vehicle systems/sub-systems and requirements.
  • Experience supporting analysis and completing documentations for product approval and launch.
  • Experience supporting structural design and analysis throughout the design, build, and test phases of a development cycle.
  • Experience with fast iteration prototyping programs.
  • Experiencing with managing system configurations and managing changes to size, weight, and cost constraints.
  • Supported or engaged directly with DoD airworthiness stakeholders such as Air Force Test Center (AFTC) or FAA.
Work Environment
  • Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
Compensation

At Divergent, our pay range is based on the level of the job. For this role, we will consider candidates at levels E03 - E07 as evaluated through our interview process.

  • Engineer / E03: $100,980 - $138,820
  • Engineer / E04: $116,600 - $160,325
