What is a structural engineer?

Structural engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. Their primary responsibility is to make sure structures can withstand loads and forces, including wind, earthquakes, and the weight of occupants. They work closely with architects and construction teams to create safe, functional, and cost-effective designs. Structural engineers use their knowledge of physics, mathematics, and materials science to solve complex engineering problems.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges related to balancing structural requirements with aesthetic or functional goals. Coordinating design changes, ensuring compliance with diverse codes, and managing communication across teams are common hurdles. Effective collaboration and proactive problem-solving are essential to meet project deadlines and ensure a cohesive final design. Developing strong interpersonal and project management skills will help structural engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD, and building information modeling (BIM) tools is commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects and ensuring design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are vital for designing safe, efficient structures and delivering successful construction projects.

What is the difference between Structural vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, licensure (PE)Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, licensure (PE)
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building frameworks, bridges, and other structuresWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, dams, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsBroader industry application including transportation, urban development, and environmental projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for project scope and specializationMore general, encompassing various civil projects

While both Structural and Civil Engineers require similar educational backgrounds and licensure, Structural Engineers specialize in designing and analyzing load-bearing structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on infrastructure projects such as roads, water systems, and urban development. The choice depends on your specific career interests and project focus.

Job description

BUILDER WANTED. Structural Steel Tech
Not just a Structural Steel Tech. A Builder.
You build the framework everything else depends on. From cutting and welding steel to rigging, erecting, and aligning structural components, your work creates the strength behind the finished structure. You take pride in precision, understand that every connection matters, and know that quality steelwork starts with doing the job safely and correctly.
At SSRG, we're looking for a Structural Steel Tech who brings skill, attention to detail, and a commitment to craftsmanship to every project.
A Legacy of Building Careers
At SSRG, we tackle complex projects and solve challenges others avoid. We believe exceptional work comes from exceptional people-people who take pride in their craft, support their teammates, and care about the quality of what they leave behind.
We know our employees have lives beyond the jobsite, and we value the balance between working hard and living well. Our culture is built on trust, growth, teamwork, and shared success. Together, we're preserving history, restoring structures, and building a legacy of quality, integrity, and purpose.
What You'll Build
  • Read and interpret blueprints and project specifications to determine dimensions and materials required for structural framing systems
  • Select, cut, and weld steel components to fabricate or repair structural parts using various welding techniques and metalworking tools
  • Erect, install, and connect steel beams, girders, and columns to form building frameworks and other structures
  • Inspect and test welds and structures to ensure they meet safety regulations and structural design specifications
  • Rig steel components for crane lifting and guide their positioning and alignment during installation
  • Operate fabricating equipment including shears, rollers, flame cutters, and drill presses
  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, construction management teams, and other trades to address field challenges, coordinate work, and keep projects moving
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition and perform regular maintenance as needed
  • Follow safety protocols and use appropriate personal protective equipment to prevent jobsite injuries and accidents
  • Use leveling and surveying equipment to ensure structures are erected plumb and level
  • Perform cutting, bending, and threading of pipes and structural steel
  • Maintain accurate records of materials used, hours worked, and job activities

What You Bring
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Vocational training or apprenticeship in welding or structural steelwork preferred
  • 2-3 years of experience in structural steel fabrication and erection
  • Proficiency in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW welding techniques and relevant certifications, such as AWS D1.1
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and structural design drawings
  • Familiarity with structural steel materials and their properties
  • Knowledge of industry safety standards and OSHA regulations
  • Competency operating cranes, forklifts, and other heavy machinery used in steel construction
  • Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy materials and stand for long periods
  • Precise hand-eye coordination and dexterity when working with tools and materials
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work at heights and in varying weather conditions
  • Problem-solving skills to address challenges during construction
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance and control
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends as required by project deadlines
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and maintaining required trade licenses or certifications

The Bottom Line
We're looking for a skilled steel professional who understands that the strength of a structure starts with the quality of the work behind it. You take pride in accurate fabrication, solid connections, safe execution, and building work that stands the test of time.
We're not looking for someone to simply cut, weld, and erect steel. We're looking for someone who takes ownership, builds trust, solves problems, and delivers craftsmanship that lasts. If that sounds like you, let's build something great together.
