What is a structural engineer?

Structural engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. Their primary responsibility is to make sure structures can withstand loads and forces, including wind, earthquakes, and the weight of occupants. They work closely with architects and construction teams to create safe, functional, and cost-effective designs. Structural engineers use their knowledge of physics, mathematics, and materials science to solve complex engineering problems.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges related to balancing structural requirements with aesthetic or functional goals. Coordinating design changes, ensuring compliance with diverse codes, and managing communication across teams are common hurdles. Effective collaboration and proactive problem-solving are essential to meet project deadlines and ensure a cohesive final design. Developing strong interpersonal and project management skills will help structural engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD, and building information modeling (BIM) tools is commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects and ensuring design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are vital for designing safe, efficient structures and delivering successful construction projects.

What is the difference between Structural vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, licensure (PE)Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, licensure (PE)
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building frameworks, bridges, and other structuresWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, dams, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsBroader industry application including transportation, urban development, and environmental projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for project scope and specializationMore general, encompassing various civil projects

While both Structural and Civil Engineers require similar educational backgrounds and licensure, Structural Engineers specialize in designing and analyzing load-bearing structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on infrastructure projects such as roads, water systems, and urban development. The choice depends on your specific career interests and project focus.

Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.

We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.

Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Project Structural Engineer to support the delivery of water, wastewater, and infrastructure projects. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the structural design of critical public infrastructure - including treatment facilities, pump stations, and related systems -while developing technical expertise and increasing responsibility in project execution.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to develop practical and efficient structural solutions for both new design and rehabilitation projects. This position provides strong growth potential, including opportunities to expand technical expertise and take on increasing ownership of design tasks as you progress toward senior-level roles.

Role accountabilities:

You will perform structural design and analysis for new and existing water and wastewater infrastructure, developing calculations, drawings, and specifications for reinforced concrete, structural steel, and masonry systems. Your work will also include evaluating existing structures and contributing to repair and rehabilitation strategies that address aging facilities and improve longterm performance. In this role, you will take ownership of defined structural design packages, manage scope and deliverables, and apply sound engineering judgment while gaining increasing independence in technical decisionmaking.

You will collaborate closely with civil, mechanical, and process teams to deliver integrated design solutions, preparing construction documents - including plans, sections, details, and specifications - and supporting quality control reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and alignment with project requirements. During construction, you will support field implementation through submittal reviews, RFIs, and site observations, working directly with contractors to resolve challenges and ensure successful execution of your designs. You will also participate in team and client coordination and contribute technical inputs for proposals and project pursuits.

You will contribute to impactful communityfocused projects at Arcadis, helping improve water quality, advance sustainability, and enhance the resilience of critical infrastructure. In this role, you will build technical expertise through handson project delivery, working alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams while supporting the design and execution of meaningful infrastructure improvements. You will take an active role in developing your professional capabilities, gaining exposure to increasingly complex responsibilities and progressing toward senior and leadership positions as you deepen your technical and project experience.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • 7 years of relevant structural engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing reinforced concrete, structural steel, and masonry systems
  • Experience with water, wastewater and flood resiliency related projects
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
  • OSHA 10 Hr Training

Continue your career journey as an Arcadian.
