What are structural engineers?

Structural engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and ensure the safety of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels. Their primary responsibility is to make sure structures can withstand loads and forces, including wind, earthquakes, and the weight of occupants. They work closely with architects and construction teams to create safe, functional, and cost-effective designs. Structural engineers use their knowledge of physics, mathematics, and materials science to solve complex engineering problems.

What are some common challenges faced by structural engineers when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural engineers often collaborate closely with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges related to balancing structural requirements with aesthetic or functional goals. Coordinating design changes, ensuring compliance with diverse codes, and managing communication across teams are common hurdles. Effective collaboration and proactive problem-solving are essential to meet project deadlines and ensure a cohesive final design. Developing strong interpersonal and project management skills will help structural engineers navigate these challenges successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in civil or structural engineering, analytical problem-solving abilities, and typically a relevant degree and professional licensure (such as PE or SE). Proficiency with structural analysis software like SAP2000, ETABS, AutoCAD, and building information modeling (BIM) tools is commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and attention to detail are standout soft skills for collaborating on multidisciplinary projects and ensuring design accuracy. These skills and qualifications are vital for designing safe, efficient structures and delivering successful construction projects.

What is the difference between Structural vs Civil Engineer?

AspectStructural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, licensure (PE)Requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, licensure (PE)
Work EnvironmentFocuses on designing and analyzing building frameworks, bridges, and other structuresWorks on infrastructure projects like roads, dams, and urban planning
Industry UsageSpecialized within construction, architecture, and engineering firmsBroader industry application including transportation, urban development, and environmental projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared for project scope and specializationMore general, encompassing various civil projects

While both Structural and Civil Engineers require similar educational backgrounds and licensure, Structural Engineers specialize in designing and analyzing load-bearing structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on infrastructure projects such as roads, water systems, and urban development. The choice depends on your specific career interests and project focus.

Job description

#jobalert | DIRECT HIRE | STRUCTURAL ENGINEER, PE | PRE-ENGINEERED STRUCTURES | Phoenix, AZ or Tavares, FL (On-Site)

A national manufacturer of custom-engineered structures is adding a licensed Structural Engineer (PE) to its front-end design team. The company has grown quickly through both organic expansion and acquisition, and its in-house engineering group drives every project from first concept to final stamped package. This is a design seat, not a checking seat โ€” the work includes structural systems that have never been built before: multi-story configurations, unusual loading conditions, and first-of-kind assemblies taken from concept through completion. You will own the structural approach on the projects that don't have a template, working shoulder-to-shoulder with design and production teams under one roof. For an engineer who is tired of repeating the same details and wants real design latitude with a licensed stamp behind it, this is that seat.

  • Anticipated $130,000โ€“$150,000+, based on experience and active PE licensure
  • Full suite of benefits: Health/Dental/Vision, 401(k), PTO
  • On-site at one of two U.S. manufacturing locations: Phoenix, AZ or Tavares, FL

Overview:

  • Own the structural design approach for new and non-standard projects, from concept through stamped submission
  • Take first-of-kind and special-interest projects start to finish โ€” multi-story complexes and configurations that have no existing template
  • Develop loads and produce complete calculation packages for gravity and lateral systems across wood, cold-formed steel, and structural steel
  • Design gravity systems: roof framing members, bearing walls, engineered and built-up beams, clean-span steel trusses, HSS and built-up posts, floor framing, and steel framing members
  • Design lateral systems: roof and floor diaphragms, interior and exterior shearwalls, and structural steel portal frames
  • Turn early-stage concepts into buildable, code-compliant structures alongside design and production teams
  • Carry multiple concurrent projects in a production-paced environment

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an EAC/ABET-accredited university
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in civil or structural engineering
  • **Complete and current NCEES record holder
  • **California, Alaska, and/or Hawaii licensure, or a demonstrated ability to obtain licensure across multiple states quickly
  • Minimum 3 years practicing as a licensed PE, stamping your own calculations
  • **Track record designing non-standard or first-of-kind structural systems โ€” not only repeat/production details
  • Load development and complete calculations for both gravity and lateral systems
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software: ENERCALC, Tekla TEDDS, RISA 3D, Woodworks, cold-formed steel design tools, Excel, and Bluebeam Revu
  • Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE, NDS, AISC, and AISI
  • Wood framing and cold-formed steel design experience
  • Multi-story wood design and/or high-wind / high-seismic experience a plus

KEYWORDS: structural engineer, PE, professional engineer, civil engineer, structural design, gravity systems, lateral systems, shearwall design, diaphragm design, wood framing, cold-formed steel, CFS, structural steel, portal frames, truss design, load development, structural calculations, ENERCALC, RISA 3D, Tekla TEDDS, Woodworks, Bluebeam, IBC, ASCE, NDS, AISC, AISI, NCEES, licensed PE, multi-story wood design, high wind zone, seismic design, concept design, front-end engineering
